Basically my idea for NPR is to...

1) relay the disused section between Normanton and Walton about 3.3km of track, the alignment is completely intacted!

2) upgrade the single track freight line from Walton to Cudworth 10km

3) relay the section between Cudworth & Swinton 13.1 km (reroute park spring road around the back of ASOS Barnsley, relocate/reconfigure a few units at Wath upon Dearn that have been built upon the old trackbed.

Then you would have a new route between Sheffield and Leeds for about 16 km of new line and 10km upgraded track.

If you don't like crayons look away now....

HS2 services from the ECML could also use it if a chord was built from the ECML to Swinton.

Wasn't there a very short thread on this idea a few weeks ago?

Looks a bit of a curve fest to me. If the idea is to have no stations between Sheffield & Leeds, then an alignment as straight as practically possible should be the overall aim.

Found it! Unfortunately I don't know how to forge a link. Perhaps a moderator might oblige?

Strategic Alternatives to High Speed 2 Phase 2b

Link not necessary, thanks for providing the title.

That's seems to be about discussing the Mott Macdonald report and the options in it which I don't believe this is!
