Hello the tfl website says that the standard fare from lewisham rail station to worcester park rail station is

Peak: £3.40 Monday to Friday from 0630 to 0930 and from 1600 to 1900.

Off Peak: £2.80 At all other times including public holidays

What route is this ?

It says that

using National Rail services only via Waterloo East/Waterloo (or Victoria and Clapham Junction)

Peak: £4.60 Monday to Friday from 0630 to 0930 and from 1600 to 1900.
Off Peak: £3.40 At all other times including public holidays.

What route do i need to take to get the £3.40 peak and £2.80 off peak fare ??

Lewisham -> Denmark Hill -> Clapham Junction -> Worcester Park

although any route that avoids ticket gates will be fine - eg
Lewisham -> New Cross -> Surrey Quays -> Clapham Junction -> Worcester Park

Lewisham -> London Bridge -> East Croydon -> Clapham Junction -> Worcester Park

Lewisham -> New Cross -> Canada Water -> Westminster -> Wimbledon -> Worcester Park

I am guessing it is avoiding the London rail termini

Probably uses the Overground via Denmark Hill to Clapham Junction

Yes, the higher fare you note above is only triggered by using the ticket gates at Waterloo East and Waterloo (or at Victoria)

If you went via Waterloo East and Waterloo and the ticket gates were both open and you didn't touch out / in the lower fare would be charged.

it would be nice if they said what route. The journey planner suggested routes make no sense

It's literally any route that doesn't use NR terminals. What did the journey planner suggest?

The default fare is charged for any route/journey that doesn't satisfy the conditions of another, specifically defined, route. In this case that could mean, for example:
  • Changing at Peckham Rye/Denmark Hill and Clapham Junction
  • Changing at London Bridge/Peckham Rye and Epsom
  • Changing at New Cross, Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction
  • Changing at London Bridge, Blackfriars and Wimbledon
Looking at journey planners and entering avoid Victoria and Waterloo, the first three routes can variously be the fastest options.

Beware that whilst you can still make an OSI in Zone 1, provided it doesn't match any of the specifically defined routes, if you use Oyster you will initially be overcharged due to limitations in the system (it can't give you a partial refund once it's already charged you for the higher fare to Zone 1).

This will be corrected when you next touch in from the following day onwards, as the back office analyses the journeys. Contactless doesn't suffer from this issue as all calculations are done in the back office anyway. Railcard discounted Oyster cards aren't subject to back office processing yet, so you won't be automatically refunded if you use one of these - you'll need to contact TfL customer services.

ok i think i will try

Lewisham -> London Bridge -> East Croydon -> Clapham Junction -> Worcester Park

or

Lewisham -> Denmark Hill -> Clapham Junction -> Worcester Park

depending on what train arrives. I misread as i thought that the fare below applies if you go via clapham junction or waterloo but what you are saying is dont touch in at the gateline at clapham junction and still go via clapham junction .

You will only be charged the higher fare if you go via Victoria and Clapham Junction. Since there are no internal barriers at Clapham Junction, it is impossible to detect that someone has changed there (you cannot force them to use the pink reader!) so really the phrase "and Clapham Junction" is redundant and only there for information.

It is perhaps confusing but the easiest way to think of it is that you will be charged the default fare, unless your touches prove you've gone via one of the specifically defined other routes.

When travelling on Oyster, the default principle is:
  • Touch in and out at the stations where you start and end your journey (even if there are no barriers)
  • Touch out and back in as necessary to pass through any barriers during an interchange
  • Touch any relevant pink reader when changing trains, if there is a cheaper route for your journey which you want to take advantage of
You don't have to touch out and back in just because you are changing trains within the same station. And in this case you want to avoid touching out and back in at any of the London Termini, otherwise you may be charged one of the higher via Zone 1 fares.

In this case the default fare is the cheaper fare, so you don't need to do anything to qualify for it. You just need to avoid meeting the conditions of the higher via Zone 1 fares.

I was once got overcharged as a result of not touching out the DLR to change to the Tube, when I was forced to touch to pass a gate, and the advice I received from the forum is to always touch out and in when making an out of station interchange at street level.

Ok, I've edited my post to clarify.

There is a difference between changing trains within the same station (i.e. Compulsory Ticket Area on TfL stations), and changing between stations (even if linked by an OSI). In the latter case you do need to touch out and back in, even if there are no barriers.

But generally the only unbarriered stations in central London are on the DLR, so this "asterisk" is probably more confusing than helpful to the OP.

What puzzles me is why there would be a TFL scale fare defined from Lewisham NR in the first place. The map on the national rail site doesn't seem to show any interconnection behind the barriers.

Looking at the current tables on https://oysterfares.com/information-pages/fares-guide-tables/ (note: the default table shown is not the current one) I'm pretty sure the £3.40 is a zone 2-4 NR only fare.

Looking at the map it seems pretty clear to me that the the intended route is almost certainly via Denmark Hill and Clapham junction.

Be aware that if you exit the paid area while changing trains at London Bridge (I don't know the platforms and layout well enough to know if you'd have to), you will be charged the higher fare.

You don't have to leave the paid area at London Bridge to change platforms but this is a valid point.

I've yet to really get the 'new' London Bridge layout into my head, I do remember this being one of the touted benefits of the redesign.

It's not that new any more I suppose!
