3 166s today at Paignton and 8 150s so no short forms. 15/20 150s working with all Cornwall and Gunnislake branch catered for. 1 not needed for Okehampton this week but 2 for new timetable. Barnstaple has it's 3 3 car 158s.

One 4 car was split in the afternoon for some reason but looked as though it was about to be reattached on the sets return from Exmouth this afternoon

Edit:

It carried on as a 2 car 250

A 4 car 150 was also taken out of service earlier (2F26) due to a fault on one unit. Unfortunately the other unit was multi-only so ended in a cancellation.

I know this forum is quite old, and the timetable from 2017 has changed quite a lot. But surely train timetables could all stay the same - minimising disruption overall between TOC's?

Can you explain what a multi-only unit is, to me it sounds like it was put in service in a faulty unrepaired condition that made it unsuitable for use when paired with another poorly maintained unit that would fail in service.

Lets hope the same depot that decided it was suitable isn’t the same one that maintains the brakes, unless they are applying different levels of workmanship to different parts of same unit.

More than likely a minor issue with one of the cabs, could be something like a broken window, a faulty wiper or something like that. Not enough to take it out of service, as long as that cab remains inward facing in a pair of units.

Its a common and safe occurance, could be an issue such as a wiper/headlight/faulty drivers seat that couldn't be repaired in time or awaiting delivery of a part, but just involves the cab having to be in the middle. Could even be something as trivial as a sun visor needing replacing.

As RPI said, it is most certainly safe to operate a multi-only unit in the same way that it's safe to operate a non-multi unit. The repair has usually been booked in but parts aren't available at the time. The latter is sometimes the reason for shortforms, TOCs would rather run a short formed train than no train at all! The amount of Turbos you see running around as non-multi does make me giggle at times

165109 & 165122 heading West today;

I'll look next week to see if one ends up at Exeter next week.
3 166s this week Mon-Fri, only 2 today. 3 short form 150s early on. Need one extra train for Okehampton from tomorrow.

From what I was told by the AOM the other day, from next week there should be 3x166 and 1 165(3 car) diagrams on weekdays on the Exmouth-Paignton circuit. This should free 2 x 150, an obvious candidate is the additional unit required for the Oke services.

The extra Turbo diagram at Exeter provides 1 x 150 for the extra Okehampton services and the other unit restores the provision of a Cornish standby unit to protect the branchline services during the summer (with most of the Main Line workings being Castle HSTs without a standby the branchlines can be very vulnerable to a unit failure as there are no longer any mainline trains a replacement unit can be ‘nabbed’ from.

I have also heard we will have 1×165/3 diagram. I do wonder how they will cope on the Devon Metro though. With no bike spaces, I'm sure the doorways will quickly become clogged up!

Edit: Looks like 165109 is being pressed into service down in Devon this afternoon to ease pressure

So from Monday are there 4 16x diagrams on the Exmouth-Paignton?

A refurbished 165 (2 car) on the Okehampton today, the air cooling system on those is so much better than the 166 Aircon!

Spot on up from 3 to 4 turbo diagrams there. A 3 car turbo has been released from Reading by some North Downs tweaks to make the plan more resource efficient.

The Air Cooling is much more reliable, however it is viewed as a ‘retrograde’ step to replace full air con with air cooling hence the perseverance with air conditioning in 166s.

Thanks for that info.

The service definitely becomes a pain when a 2 car 150 drops on, I think today at one point there were two 2 car 150's out, not good when its a) Saturday and b) Exeter pride!

Its hard to believe that pre covid we had an hourly Paignton service that was mostly 2 car formations, yet now its half hourly with mostly 4 car or 3 car turbo and yet we still struggle, positive that passenger numbers have recovered nicely.

Was it mostly 2 car? I remember seeing the Pacers in pairs more often than not, or one attached to a Sprinter. Then again, I’ll admit you’d know more than I would.

There were a couple of 2 car diagrams and some 4 car pacer diagrams, 4 car pacers being inferior in terms of actual capacity though, especially compared to now.

There were also two 2 car pacer diagrams which were cosy at best, the Exmouth-Paignton diagrams (pre December 19) also interworked with the Barnstaple line.

There are 6 150 Diagrams with Paignton workings in them.
So is that three pairs?

A 2 car 165 is out today and annoyingly was on the 07:54 from Exmouth, the only 2 car diagram too by the looks of it.

Yes, three pairs, two of which split at Exeter SD early evening. Two units remain on the Paignton working separately, 1 unit does Okehampton and one goes to depot.

There are no 2 car 165 diagrams with Paignton work booked*. The 07.54 from Exmouth is on a 166 diagram so the 2 car 165 was substituting.

Strangely there is a 166 diagram that works Paignton / Exmouth FSX but works Severn Beach FO, conversely there is a 3 car 165 that works the Severn Beach FSX but works Paignton / Exmouth on Friday.

I wonder what the thinking is behind the same workings being a 166 FSX but a 165 FO.

(* based on the SX LTP WTT diagrams that commenced today)

FSX: Fridays & Saturdays excepted
FO: Friday Only

Sorry, should have been clear, I knew the 165 was a short formation, I'm not yet familiar with the new diagrams other than that there are 4 turbo diagrams.

From what I can make out Barnstaple has a booked 150 now in the evening once the Barnstaple Axminster service departs, the inward working from Okehampton goes into platform 2 at Central then goes back out as the 18:15 Barnstaple.

There was also a 3 car 158 deputising today, I worked this on 2T07 which was cosy after Newton Abbot (me being me i still fought my way through and checked tickets 8-))

What tweaks exactly?
Have the dwell times been reduced?

Surely they would be better off ditching the 769 timings and going back to the faster 165 paths

I think that the 20:19 off Central to Barnstaple in the evenings is also booked for a 150 now as I believe it splits from another 150 earlier on at St Davids (2F29) and does a service to Okehampton and then returns to Central to then form the 20:19 to Barnstaple but I could be wrong.

165122 is on this evening section today it seems.

SX = 20 diagrams. 8 from 10x 2 cars. 12 from 14x 3 cars

yes, it’s 2T29 it splits from at St David’s, does the 18.45 to Okehampton, back to Central, the 20.19 to Barnstaple, back to St Davids then empty to depot.

With one 2-car in Wolverton for the next two months while 165125 and then 165127 go for re-fresh, 165122 away in Devon and 165121 seemingly as lifeless as a Dodo, isn't that really 8 diagrams from 7x 2cars? I know some 2-car diagrams can be covered by 3-cars, such as the Bourne End peaks diagram today, but you only need two LTV units to be out of service at the same time and cancellations become inevitable?

Isn't Bourne End peaks booked a 3car?

Also Reading Green Park opens soon, so 3 165s will be needed to provide the 2tph
