Hello

I was sat in first class with a standard ticket. The guard came and then said my ticket wasn't valid in first.

I was told that usually I would have been penalty fared but in this case I was offered the opportunity to buy a first class single - which I then did do, buying from the guard. I was polite, as was the guard throughout.

I was not asked for, and gave no details etc. except for paying on my card.

I am worried sick regarding this mistake, am I likely to hear any further or is that the end of the matter?

Thanks

if you bought a ticket from the guard that covered your full journey on that train and he took no details, that will be then end of the matter.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I bought a ticket from the guard and no details taken.
I'll probably be worrying over nothing as usual I imagine

Obvious additional advice for the OP is that they may not have such a (relatively favourable) outcome should they find themselves in a similar situation on a future occasion.

Seems like you were essentially offered the chance to buy an upgrade - tho it sounds like you were sold a whole new ticket. If you had gone to the ticket office say, before getting on, I believe (depending on what sort of standard class ticket you held) you would probably have been able to buy an excess ticket being the difference between the fare you had paid and the cheapest walk up 1st class fare for the journey. If I am correct that would be a bit cheaper than a whole new 1st class single ticket.

Tho others may correct me on this.

I guess what you did was different to going to find the guard before taking the 1st class seat and asking if you could buy an upgrade, in that the matter was only sorted out when your ticket was checked.

That makes sense. Thank you for your reply

I've always wondered if, strictly speaking, is it permissible to pass through a first class carriage to get to a standard one when boarding etc... if you only hold an ordinary ticket?.

The Railway Byelaws state:

19. Classes of accommodation, reserved seats and sleeping berths

Except with permission from an authorised person, no person shall remain in any seat, berth or any part of a train where a notice indicates that it is reserved for a specified ticket holder or holders of tickets of a specific class, except the holder of a valid ticket entitling him to be in that particular place.
So you can pass through, but not remain there. This is fairly common sense - otherwise on stock like the 185s where first class isn't at the end of the unit you wouldn't be able to pass through first to the rest of the standard class accommodation if required.

Can the OP ask for a refund on his original ticket, or is it the case that once through the barriers, the ticket has been 'used'?

As they had to purchase a brand new tickets the original tickets remains unused and they may be entitled to a refund subject to any administration fees depending on the ticket type held.
