Help! I have a passport that expires in about 6 months i.e. BEFORE the day I intend my 3 month pass to start. For various reasons including eyesight I need a paper pass.....can I give them my driving licence number which has a photo ID and also has my date of birth, or will they allow a change of passport number provided the person stays the same? The website appears to say NO.......

I may just put my driving licence number in, it's a much longer and complex number than my passport number.....

I emailed Interrail today and they said I should enter the number of my current passport and take it with me (as well as the new one) when I travel as a means of identification. I suggest you contact them and get that same assurance.

I am now also considering buying a 1 or 2 month pass for use in the autumn or next spring, realising the cost is now very similar to a 7 days in a month pass. I would then use it probably for 1 long trip and some weekends afterwards. I would return to home multiple times in the period but I would only be able to use it twice in my home country (Netherlands). In a few cases 2nd class (compulsory) reservations can be quite a bit cheaper than in 1st class. If you hold a 1st class pass but only want 2nd class travel for that leg can you just use a 2nd class reservation?

Yes it can. You'll need to enter the first train manually as Hazeldonk (gr) - Antwerpen-Centraal, with Hazeldonk (gr) in Belgium, so it won't complain about your country of residence.

Thanks! In a similar fashion I assume it’s also possible to buy a ticket between my home station and the first stop abroad and choosing 100% discount in the neighbouring country to make sure I’ll pay only until the border.

Could not get through to interrail.co.uk today but interrail.eu had a robotic help desk which confirms you can buy today with existing ID then when it expires take it or a photocopy of it plus new ID to confirm bona fides of pass holder! Phew!!

On interrail.eu the extension is until 6:00 CEST.
The UK site currently shows "504 Gateway Time-out".
Interrail.eu had similar problems over the weekend, is a bit slow at the moment but still shows the homepage and their shop. Although adding a pass to your cart now takes forever.

the EUrail forum-which also serves this, has now about 2 pages of individual requests and pleas to extend it as it has been hopelessly overrun the last hrs. I succeeded in a whim to buy one in the afternoon.
That site still often uses-as a relic to please USA-people on EUrail-am and pm.

I bought 2 passes yesterday afternoon because I expected the Interrail website to struggle in the evening. They already had problems during the weekend, when they added capacity but apparently that wasn't enough.

Managed to buy a 3 month first class pass from the My Interrail (i.e. ATOC) site this morning. I have no idea where I'll go but I doubt it will ever be that cheap again. And with FIP facilities being so patchy across Europe it's a hell of a lot easier than trying to find out how to get a supplement or whatever for a coupon!

If you want to use a paper pass, yes. With a mobile pass you can activate it when you please, but there are drawbacks as previously stated.

Only if you choose the paper pass option.
With the mobile option, you download the pass and 'activate' it whenever you like in the next 11 months.

Thanks for that. Might not work for me then as I can't put any dates for the paper version and my wife is not an "app" person so she would faint at the thought of having to use one.
Edit: and I'm not sure our cat would be happy if we disappeared for a month.
Oh well, the offer it tempting but I will have to pass on the pass.

That's a shame. I suspect they might be looking to move completely to the app in the near future, as others have suggested. I also have my reservations (no pun intended) but decided to go for the app version, thinking that the app itself will continue to be updated in the next few months and should become more reliable.

Possibly, but remember that Europe is emerging from pandemic restrictions which have depressed travel.

My daughter has had no difficulty with passholder tickets on ES a month ahead, though has found the cheapest tier of a Saturday afternoon Paris-Strasbourg-Frankfurt sold out, which slightly surprised me.
And outside France/Spain/Italy there are few daytime compulsory reservations anyway. I'd be at least as worried about overcrowding on German regional trains with their €9 ticket.

And will GWR First Class be full of retired EU citizens drinking all the beer and wine?

Depends if they pay for it - unlike with LNER and Avanti .
