Had one of my trips to the North West yesterday, and both ways the TPE service to and from Liverpool sits in Manchester Victoria for around 15 minutes, and generally the schedule seems very relaxed, we arrived 3 mins early into Leeds and sat 6 mins there.

Why the long wait at Man Vic, which also blocks a platform?

The cynic in me would say its just a way to appear to be 'on time' even with disruption. TPE could obviously run a quicker service, just dont choose to do so

Historically, TPE like XC and longer distance Central Trains routes got lowest priority so often sat long waits at interchanges like Leeds, Sheffield or Bristol waiting for paths that did not conflict with the area's primary operator(s).

Maybe someone can tell us if TPE still suffers that.

I believe its to help provide a more even service from Manchester to York, otherwise there would be a 45 minute gap if the LIV to NCL departed straight away as I assume the Manchester Airport to Redcar times are constrained by Oxford Road?

Through covid, TPE has only one Liverpool-Manchester service, and it stops at both Lea Green and Newton le Willows on a slower schedule.
It therefore misses its path eastwards from Victoria, so waits for the next one (which used to be an Airport-York).
Same tactic westbound.
One day, when 2tph resume via Chat Moss, the times will go back to where they were pre-covid.

Judging by loading yesterday when I joined the service at Man Vic on the 4.30pm ish arrival from Liverpool there is going to be a hard job justifying the second service. The service was lightly loaded, and if you split that in two there would be an awful lot of empty seats. Even from Manchester to Leeds I sat in coach A at the front, which was may be 50% full and further back down the train was at about 75%, this sort peak time loading would indicate that the old intensive 5 fasts per hour isnt needed now. Will it ever be? who knows, but my guess would be probably not.

Not at all. If that were the aim, they would simply advertise the arrival times as later (using what's called a PB adjustment). TfW do this quite a lot - for example on their South Wales-Manchester services the advertised arrival time can be as much as 5 minutes after than the scheduled arrival time. Their Bidston-Wrexham service used to have trains advertised as departing Wrexham before the inbound train was supposed to have arrived!

TPE generally have a 2 minute PB, typically at the destination station. PB is going out of fashion though, with destination-based measures such as PPM going out of favour and being replaced by station-by-station measures such as "time to 15".

Actually it's down to delivering the 'least bad' outcome given the reduced timetable.

TPE could obviously run a quicker service, just dont choose to do so
In theory, yes. But then the departures from Manchester Victoria would be xx15, xx30, followed by nothing for 45 minutes. By having that dwell it evens out the departures to xx15 and xx45, thus delivering a more attractive service for the larger market of Huddersfield/Leeds/York-Manchester. Unfortunately those who use the service across Manchester suffer as a result, but you can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs...

The fundamental issue is that the pre-Covid pattern was alternating trains to Manchester Airport and Liverpool every 15 minutes. To keep running direct services to both Liverpool and the Airport whilst running only 2tph, something has to give. Otherwise you end up with that 15/45 split of services.

When the Scarborough services are reintroduced (albeit it's now looking like they will never come back in their pre-Covid form, instead becoming Hull-Liverpool) the problem will be less acute, as you will then have xx00, xx15 and xx30 off Victoria. So at that point you could drop the ~15 minute dwell at Victoria.

Exactly. The path of the Airport service is pretty much set in stone given the number of interactions it has in the Castlefield and Airport corridor. So if you want to maintain that direct link, everything else has to work around that.

Not quite - there is enough 'slack' in the schedule to accommodate an extra call whilst broadly keeping to pre-Covid timings east of Victoria.

The May timetable changed should have changed the pattern into the following hourly services:
- Liverpool to York (The same path as the pre-Covid Liverpool to Edinburgh service) 802 operated
- Liverpool to Scarborough
- Manchester Airport to Redcar/Saltburn
- Manchester Victoria to Newcastle (The same path as the pre-Covid Manchester Airport to Newcastle service) 802 operated

Unfortunately this has been deferred due to ongoing crew shortages.

The Newcastle to Liverpool is consistently up to 15 minutes late, so this 20 mins wait is well worth it. It's not blocking any other services with the current timetable either.

I find that surprising, given how often I work that route I have been consistently on time, maybe a couple of minutes late out of York which has usually picked back up by Leeds or Darlington. Granted I havent worked any saturdays in the last couple of months but thats purely down to luck of the roster pattern where spares and leave have dropped in….

Maybe you are on the lucky services but I am at Victoria for 9 hours a day watching and waiting ha, maybe the word 'consistently' wasn't correct to be fair to TPE but the wait is useful for to getting on time running back again, I don't think they should remove it personally

Todays snap shot

0724 - Arrived 34L departed 33L
0822 - arrived 1 early and departed on time
0922 - Cancelled
1022 arrived 15L departed 2L
1122 arrived 5L departed on time
1222 arrived 11L departed on time
1322 arrived 5L departed on time
1422 arrived and departed on time
1522 arrived and departed on time
1622 arrived 2L and departed on time

Hmmm… Looks like an issue affecting getting the unit off heaton affected 9M03
And 9M16 had a special stop order for Thirsk but signallers were unaware and Did not set the route at northallerton, delay occurred there while driver rightly questioned it. Oops!

And as you well know those are just two examples of the multitude of things that occur day to day that are mostly in the hands of the gods to be fair, flooding, high winds, snow, animals on the line, trespassers, over running engineering, trains at 75 degree angles in the depot and that's minus all the things that Northern delay and TPE curse themselves with.

I am just in the mindset that a timetable with more slack despite the slower journey time that still gets the passengers in when the timetable states is better for the passengers than trains that are generally late.
