Mileage Competition 2011

Just sorting out a season ticket which would be £12024 under normal circumstances but which I've got for rather less. If I chose to that would make racking up the miles quite easy - but I'll probably be a little over 20k by the end of the year.

Well after my Devon Day Ranger today when i racked up 299 miles, I am currently sat on 779. Will be on a Freedom of the South West next week with a cheeky West Midland Day Ranger and Southern Day save ticket thrown in for good measure. New route for most of the Southern ticket and a whole load of miles.

Am curious how far it is from St Pancras to Lille Europe as I'm now booked up for a trip

Asuming the same rules as last year apply, any mileage that you can determine an official distance for over rails counts. So something like Nice to Marseille would be fine, but something like Bristol Parkway to Newport via the Severn Bridge wouldn't because it would be by replacement bus service (and thus not on rails).

Rather than using chains, some of us use decimal like the rest of the country has since 1971!

How long is a decimal?

Its not a measurement I have heard of before, is it the length of one of those early piano like instruments?

Looking gooooooooooooood for a run out to Three Bridges tomorrow crossover bashing! Another Cherry Tree-Preston-Euston-St Pancras job, then the Thameslink down to Three Bridges, down to Gatwick, returning as far as London Bridge, then maybe a little run out in South London if time permits! I'm too tired to bother to calculate the mileage ATM, though I would guess it to be similar to last week (see the sig!) at around 520-560 miles return. Ace!

Hmm, I was correct. Several crossovers at Three Bridges were completed today, the Brighton ML was closed southwards thereafter, hence crossovers being done for FCC services to terminate, with diverted Southern services to Brighton going via Crawley, Arundel and a crossover at Ford, before going back along the West Coastway (the crossover at Ford was completed in the autumn of last year when one of the engines failed on the Wandering Willow railtour!). The Thameslink was open on a weekend (for the first time since 1929 ), which was followed by a run back up to Gatwick, then down to Horsham via Crawley (line bash, maybe one of the longest remaining to do!) and back to the Airport. Following this was a trip up to East Croydon, and a run down to the beautiful Kenley station on the Caterham branch (if I had been to Caterham and back, I'd have been back at home an hour later). Returning to East Croydon, there followed a trip back up to St Pancras on a FCC-liveried Southern-interior 377, on which I heard a wonderful argument between a mother and her daughter over her cookie. Wonderful . The 630 Euston to Preston had a fairly good run (it had to wait 3-4 minutes at both Warrington and Wigan in order to leave on time!). Then followed the delight of the 1722 Preston-Colne failing at Pleasington, with all replacement buses to Blackburn, Colne and Hebden bridge not materialising (despite being advertised). The 1922 was waiting in p2 for clearance to proceed, and after a twice-as-long run (in time) run to Cherry Tree, a truly awesome track-bashing day was complete (even if it was about 40 miles shorter than last week!).

For those interested, the completely unacceptable events of last week, which showed a 150 working on the east Lancs line will be pleased to know that normal service was resumed this week, as the same service was a 142 (though at least one of the three/four trains that work the route daily was a 156!).

Managed to increase my total quite a lot today. Despite commuting by rail to and from work every day, because my journey there is 2 miles and on the way back 1 mile 66 chains, I hadn't got very far!

Would have been very intereting to ask for a ticket at Exeter St Davids to Exeter Central. I once bought a ticket from Bristol Temple Meads to Lawrence Hill.

I'm having a crack at using the rail miles engine to calculate how much in the way of mileage I'm accumulating at work. I can't enter the competition of course, it's more of a curiosity, but I can't seem to get rail miles to work. The site returns a script error or "error in calculating node" when routeing via somewhere. Any clues?

The gates at St Davids were open, the ones at Central were not so I'm glad I did!

I also bought 2 singles by credit card* recently! (Eurostar do through tickets only from St Davids) then discovered after I picked them up I didn't need one as the train was diverting via Yeovil and stopping at central!

*was hoping that the machines were still doing the insert payment card and get all tickets ordered so did them on the same card as the E* ones

Selhurst TRSMD to London Bridge via Norwood Jn, Sydenham, Bricklayers Arms Jn and South Bermondsey Jn.

I've tried a direct Selhurst TRSMD to London Bridge, using all the routeing points, using only one, using two, all sorts of combinations.

I've tried fiddling it using Selhurst station and it seems to work. Now got the task of trawling through this weeks STN's to input the routing points. I think I may save that for a rainy afternoon this weekend.

Well I've not updated my mileage for a week or so but that's cos ive not been home to work out exactly what I have done so far on my FOSW. But I have cleared 2k for the week so far!

Is that an 8 in 15 rover? 2,000 in a week is a LOT!

My mileage has gone through the roof, thanks to my 3-day Irish bash. I'm now on 1,529 miles!

Yes it is. I've added a couple rangers to it for a couple of days too. Today I have done a west midlands ranger and yesterday a Southern Daysave. Living down in Plymouth also means that I get the last train back to maximise my day in areas that have new route for me. All of yesterdays southern was new for me. I stayed in Bournemouth at a friends though so I was almost at the start of the Southern network.

I think the 8 in 15s are good value but I am back to work next week so I will only manage 7 days before it expires. I'm knackered though! Lol!

Having a run to Leeds, Selby and Sheffield tomorrow, not much but hopefully a couple of hundred miles!

Working off Blackburn-Leeds-Selby-Sheffield-Leeds-Blackburn, it should be roughly 192 miles Nice

Ok! Having finished my stint for the week with my FOSW and rangers i have racked up 2581 miles. That puts me on 3427 so far for the year! I doubt i'll be able to maintain this momentum all year but i have another rover for the north west in Feb and a couple of tours lined up for march and then may.

Journey out today was a little bit shorter than expected last night, turned out to be a run to Keighley via Bradford. Couple of points of notice here: 1) Am I the only person who actually likes both Bradford stations? and 2) Class 333s are awesome, the acceleration on them is excellent. It was nice to tie-in with the arrival of a steam train from Oxenhope, nice at Keighley how the modern-day and 1960s can sit next to each other so perfectly. Check the sig later for details!

Hmm, appears I am being thwarted in my quest to be top of the mileage league! Oh well, the Rother-Don Rambler and the Galloway Galloper railtours over next weekend, and the second weekend of February should see me rack up over 600 miles a time, along with a trip to any two of Haslemere, Totton and Eastleigh in the middle weekend should see me onto well over 2500 by the end of February. Nice!

Just decided to add up my mileage, 1120miles 39 chains. Travel bristol to shirley every week. Boosted by a trip to Alexandra Palace and a detour on the way back to paddington via Greenwich.
