Hello to all,

It's been a long time since I ran any form of model layout however, I feel the time is right to return to the hobby.

At the moment I am looking at running prototypical loco hauled trains and now my research falls to electrical multiple units. I would like help/advice/recommendations on any ready to run/kits/conversation kits etc for any post war EMU. I recently came across some DC Kits which I must have purchased in the 1990's for class 504/302/304/5's. However, a few Google searches later showed they are no longer available. So I am reaching out to the Railforum community for help. I am open to any mainline running EMU for 1950 onwards, partly because a lot of these where still around when I was a child and from my early spotting days too. Any area any liveries etc. Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards.

Hello! :)
There are various EMU models out there, but they can go for ludicrous amounts of money. @reddragon is very good at finding bargains so he might be able to help some more, but here are some finds from a few searches online:

There isn't much the way of modern-image EMUs in ready-to-run form, but you can find kits for various classes etc.

it depends on what you want on your layout really.

The recent avalanche of Southern EMUs has been great although in some cases of rather patchy quality. (The VEP and 2BIL from Hornby spring to mind, especially the Hornby gangway, traction tyre and solid partitions and the BIL's periscope in the passenger saloon debacles) Kernow's TC has been en excellent and less obvious addition. Hopefully a REP to go with them might be considered in the future. Not to mention Heljan's excellent 33s and the (again patchy) 73s that have come out. The Thumper (A Kernow commission like the TC) is also very popular and an excellent model, as is the HAP and the 2EPB. The only thing is the prices have spiralled upwards due to various factors, the cost of materials, wages in China, the shortage of containers caused by the blocking of the Suez canal, plus the need to get Hornby back into profit, a task accomplished finally by Mr. Kohler so well done there.

As for other EMUs the Desiro is a great model although too much out of my era, the Blue Pullman also, (but the other way hehe)
I would be tempted by a Brighton Belle though if I had the readies. as it's not only a beautiful model but relevant to my area of interest and only just out of era. Not beyond a minor tweak or two though. Could be a Display case and occasional run set. The forthcoming 769 leads to the possibility of a 319 too if the tooling is made up of switchable inserts. Again stock from my youth.

DC Kits used to do a kit for a 6 car Hastings set although these are AFAIK out of print.
Bratchell models have produced a 455which looks amazing. Again a very late70s/80s/even 90s model. If you mopdel a certain era I'd say two of these would be ideal, They go together very well by all accounts. They do the Scottish EMUs such as the 318 as well as various other things that are well worth a look.
Another one to have a look at if it's 60s and 70s would be Harrison Brown Models. They do resin kits and produce Bulleid 2EPBs and a pretty good 4COR. We had them at our show when I was with Brighton MRC and they look really nice.

Given how incredibly common MUs are in the UK it always surprises me how poor the model offering of them is

Peter

You can get the 2BIL/2HALs for around £85 but not on eBay. Rails eBay do them sometimes & you make an offer of 10-15% off.

The MLVs go for around £80-90 each on eBay, elsewhere are pricey.

Green 411s come up at under £200 new, but other colours are c£275. I paid £160 for blue/grey 2nd hand.

5BELs can be hit & miss on price, but 5 cars are £350. 1930s set seems cheapest.

416s c£120
450s are now quite pricey are getting rarer, probably £300+
466s sometimes £70 but DCC fitting add £50-100
491s new at Kernow are the cheapest.
410s still £400+
414s still £220+
