Can a zone 1-9 Travelcard be used at Epsom?

As title. Epsom is in unpublished zone 9. Can I use a zone 1-9 day Travelcard to transfer at Epsom unlimited times?

Epsom is outside of the London zonal area, so a Zones 1-9 day travelcard would only get you as far as Ewell East/West.

It is worth mentioning, however, that Epsom is in the Oyster & Contactless PAYG area. Since you mention transferring at Epsom, it’s worth noting that if you don’t leave the station whilst using PAYG, you don’t get charged for going outside of Zone 6. Regardless of whether you leave the station, once you’ve reached the cap for the day, any subsequent journeys will come at no extra cost.

@MikeWh's article here states that since the extension of Oyster/contactless to Epsom, it is treated as being in Zone 9 by the ticket barriers (in terms of letting you through, as well as the caps applied on contactless/Oyster PAYG).

This is down to the assumed route - I'm not quite sure why, but even journeys such as Ewell West to East are priced as Zone 3-6 (via Wimbledon and Sutton presumably?). See @MikeWh's fare finder. But if you do make a journey which is priced via Zone 9, then this affect the system's calculations of what cap to apply.

Yes. The reason Epsom isn't talked about as being in zone 9 is that the price of an Epsom to zones 1-6 period travelcard is significantly less than the price of the equivalent zones 1-9 travelcard. However, Epsom is in zone 9 and any travelcard including zone 9 is valid there.

So I think it’s referring to a zone 1-6 rather than zone 1-9

Yes, the contactless stuff will work and that's why the unpublished zone.

For paper Travelcards, if you buy one at Epsom it'll be an outboundary one; the two Ewell stations are the limit of the zones proper.

Would the case be technically not holding a valid ticket and can be prosecuted since Epsom is not officially in travelcard zone?

It seems very silly to me that it's so 'cloak and dagger' as to whether Epsom is really in Zone 9. I understand why because the outboundary Travelcards are cheaper than other zone 9 locations but still.

Wouldnt you need a Boundary Zone 6 ticket to/from Epsom or beyond (i.e. somewhere like Dorking / Guildford)?

That's interesting. It shouldn't be valid, but if NRE says you can use one it would make for an interesting test case.

If NRE is willing to offer it, and you're able to buy an itinerary via that route, it's contractually valid. However I would anticipate difficulties if you tried to break your journey at Epsom or were checked between Ewell and Epsom...
