Forget the tfw 158's for at least a year if not longer.

Then they would need extensive alterations to take out the ertms kit.

Why would it need removing?
I thought they could be used on routes without ERTMS? TfW use them just fine on routes without it, though staff might require additional training due to the different cab.

Indeed, that's why I asked the question.
Presumably being the Ansaldo / Hitachi kit it’s largely specified for use on the Cambrian, and may be incompatible with newer systems elsewhere?
Which isn't a problem until those newer versions are actually rolled out across the network. If they need changing then, those units are no different to the existing fleet which will also need the ETCS equipment to be fitted.

Is it even likely that ETCS will reach any current 158 routes before they are withdrawn, in which case it won’t matter either way?

Maintenance and reliability for one. Kit like ETCS needs to be maintained and calibrated at it is in safety critical circuits even if it is not used with the track-based equipment. It's the same logic that has seen GW-ATP removed from ScotRail's HST power cars (and, indeed, 43159).

The 158's tfw use are always running under ertms. Outside of the cambrian it runs on level 0.

The DMI takes a large portion of the desk up, aligned with the other elements (JRU, ballse readers, additional dopplers, additional speed probes to name a few parts.) It requires additional power and has lots of bits on it making them completely non standard.

The fitters who inherit these units with all this gear on would be absolutely flummoxed when it came to failure, as would drivers unless they underwent a conversion course.

Or, they could remove it all and have them uniformed.
