Good news with clearing the TPE 802s, even with a tight connection at Dewsbury (one of those stations where changing platforms in a hurry is made harder by having to exit via one set of gates and enter via a second set of gates. Especially as they are not the most utilized fleet at the moment (with the Newcastle - Manchester Airport binned, certainly the next time I'm in Manchester or Yorkshire I will looking for my last couple)

Agreed about Bordesley, it will be like Chiltern only running the extra Wembley Stadium services at the end of 90 minutes when the game goes into extra time and penalties so by the time the crowds arrive the station has dropped to the usual half hourly services with 2 coach units

An excellent read as always, mega ouch to the Bordesley farce though. I felt the frustration with the 172/0s, that would have driven me crazy!

Well done on clearing the TP 802s, I can't imagine that's been terribly easy to do with the many restrictions over the last 2 years. I need almost all of them, something that definitely needs correcting!

Also nice work with getting your penultimate 158 with EMR!

Yeah, I'll be going from Wigan so depends on the overall difference between Wigan to Crewe plus WM Day Ranger and Wigan to Wolves plus Adult Plus Daytripper. If it's negligible or relies too much on Advances to make the Wolves ticket cheaper, then I'll do the Ranger. Also more flexibility getting back if I end up on the WCML in the evening.

Apologies to @ash39 for thread drift.

The gates at Dewsbury rarely seem to be in use these days, I can't remember the last time I saw them closed actually. Same for Huddersfield and Wakefield Westgate, though I rarely go to any of these places in peak times.

The reality is I should have cleared the TPE 802's a long time ago, but up until those final three moves they never fell kindly for me. I've got a few of them well over 100 miles now. Funny how it goes, some stuff falls into place really nicely and some have you chasing around for ages.

Agreed there, the 350s took me ages to complete and the LM 170s were a surprisingly challenging job despite their running in and out of Hereford all the time back then.

My last Welsh 158 also took an age to find, and I was in South Wales more often than not back in the early to mid 2000s. To be fair, I did focus much more on HSTs at the time!

I got down to two welsh 158's for quite a while, then one randomly showed up in Newport of all places to take me to Cardiff (it was a journey I was waiting for anyway so required traction was a bonus) and the last one was in the Birmingham area when on a Daytripper. Does mean that when I finally get round to shack scratching on the Cambrian line I won't have that bit of excitement that there might be a required unit around!

Hunting down those last few units of a particular class has gotten easier since RTT displays allocations for some TOCs.

(At least for me, when it came to hunting down the last few 195/331s on Northern, or 385s in Scotland)

I know the data feed into RTT sometimes isn't 100% but it's better than nothing.

That data feed does a good job in general I find, but when it comes to TfW it can be hit and miss. I've been bowled out by it 3 times now, but I might be ruining a tale for my trip report thread ;)

Keeps it interesting! Would have been very useful if Northern had it when I was hunting Pacers but there is nothing like that feeling of anticipation that you might just come across that unit you need!

Oh my yes, RTT still feels like cheating really but with some classes it's kind of handy for clearing those last pesky members of a class. My available time to go chasing trains is much more restricted these days, so anything that helps when impulse kicks in makes a difference.

I know what you mean there, the anticipation when chasing my last GWR 802/1 was always intense (same for the last 800/0 for that matter) and it felt so rewarding when I got the train of my desires :D

I do have a desire to head north again, but this time it will be for non-train reasons!

Neglected this thread for 2 months as I did no moves at all in February, but normal service was resumed in March (and April is already underway, too)

It’s always enjoyable reading your days out. May many more be planned now daylight is stretching out at last.

I always write up my tales from the rails for my future self to look back on, but if someone else gets enjoyment from them too then great. It's a shame we seem to have lost a fair few trip report people over the last couple of years, hopefully now restrictions have eased we'll see some of them return.

Will definitely be planning some trips away for summer. I always seem to end up in Scotland at least once, and I really ought to make a start on the South Coast/South East, both of which are essentially untouched beyond the London Travelcard zones.

Oh my yes, definitely the best way to do a trip report. I do this often with my own, it's interesting to see what was going on at the time. I'm sure the ones I've done this year, and will do as the year continues to fly by (how is it almost mid-April already?) are going to be, well, interesting tales to read and potentially even share in the future.

(I had a much bigger next paragraph, but I somehow wiped it out. Twice  )

I was thinking about this trip reporting thing last night at work, and we've lost some big names. Kite159 (for some reason when I tag him in this it then wipes out the text) has moved on to produce his excellent trip reports elsewhere, and @heart-of-wessex is now a full time coach driver I believe. Keith Jarrett, he was a legendary character on here and I do wonder what happened to him. I know he had a lot of work stuff happening, and I hope whatever he's up to he is all well. I genuinely don't know, if anyone does I'd appreciate hearing about him.

There's just 3 big names all moved on, and the way things are developing here I will soon be in that same crowd. Indications are that the year has a lot of good stuff lined up for me. I've spent a lot of time here recently, but now I've recovered from injury (cycling accident) I've got back out there and I'm finding less of a need to be on here. So I've already cut back my forum time in the last week, and developments are that I need to consider just how much time I spend on here on an average week. In time, I'm sure my trip report thread will reveal more details on this decision, for now it's all very much on a need-to-know basis. Once the relevant people are all genned up, and so far only one person has received the full gen, then it can be revealed here.

All good things, of course, and the point being that, like the others, it's fast approaching the time when I finish the long-running improvement scheme. My my, it seems appropriate that Coldplay's Fix You is playing right now! There's still things on that scheme to be completed, and I've been doing a lot of them in the background lately. Soon, the connection to the forum will get cut too and I will be in the same club of people who've moved on!

ANYWAY! Enough of all that! Let's talk about your March trips. It was clearly a quiet month for you (rather the opposite to mine!) but it was still productive. I can imagine you were very glad to get back to the Parkrun runs again, and what a great way to connect with your daughter. Running's not for me, I have tried but the cardio-respiratory system just can't cope and the body is too weak for that. Power/speed walking and cycling, I am well up for that though! When I want to go for gold, my record average speed is 5.2mph over an hour as my personal best. It was 5.0mph until some weeks back, and yes there is a plan to push harder at some point. I hit 5.1mph for the average over a 75 minute walk this week though, after not really trying to begin with. So that's as close to running as I am willing to go!

Well done with that 68 too!

April report attached, a trip to the North East and a new class of unit experienced, but a pretty quiet month in general.

I don't envy you with making a tight connection in Leeds after a heavy session on the alcohol! o_O Other than that, it looks like you had a decent month, despite bouncing back from the dreaded c-word!

A very enjoyable and entertaining report as always. Thanks for taking the time to write it all out. One small point though....the new station on the Durham Coast line is Horden, rather than Horley. Don't you just love predictive text? :D

I always had a backup, which would have involved the wife getting back into York and then driving back to Leeds to pick me up. I'm glad I made it though, as I don't think that option would have gone down well!

Guilty! I often write half the report up as I travel on my phone, and then tidy it up and add more detail, photos etc on the laptop. Corrections are always welcome!

If I was in your shoes with a 30 minute delay on a dirt cheap advance i would select a northern freebie single ticket as that could be more valuable than 75p

I always take the free ticket from Northern when it's offered. It has greater value to me than a few pounds that will just go back in my bank account.

I wonder how long until they decide to axe that scheme quoting cost saving because doing free tickets takes up more admin time & postage cost.

Or change it so the free tickets are less valuable, i.e. can only be used between 09:30 - 16:00 & 18:30 - end of service on weekdays

I did exactly that, though it's pretty much useless until I get a second one as it's very unlikely I'll ever need to go anywhere and not come back!

May report is below. I won't lie, it's a big read. Probably the best month for rail moves since before lockdown, possibly ever. Good weather, variety and a lot of winners.

Crazy use of said single will be to get a cheap advance from say York to Darlington (or Middlesbrough) then to do a large loop back towards York via Newcastle, Carlisle, Barrow, Preston then York.

I will take a look at your May report tomorrow:)

Would you be valid via the Cumbrian Coast when the S&C is a shorter route?

But a very good idea to get use of the ticket!

You weren't wrong, that was a long read but WOW what a month that was! Incredibly productive, and as always some amazing photos in there. Brilliant read, as always, and I've been inspired to get myself back to West Sussex. I just need to book some time off work, which is actually a tougher task than it used to be. I am also inspired to go back to London but do some serious red penning this time.

As for the Parkrun, it looked good and I actually wish to discuss it more in detail, but I will PM you this weekend about that :)

Excellent report as always Ash.
I've done a couple of the Southern Daysave tickets in the past (and am doing an overnighter next month which will be two days worthwhile of tickets).

I've also had repeated issues with gate lines and staff education is seriously lacking in what the ticket is and where its valid. I missed a train at Hove last year due to the lady on the gate line questioning the ticket.
