I travelled on a child's ticket in error and was told to expect a fine in the post. I have just received an MG11 fine of £80 and understand this is not a penalty fine. Where the charge would be nearer £20. Can anyone clarify why Greater Anglia have gone down the MG11 route? Is this valid or should I challenge? Thanks

An MG11 is a witness statement for use in criminal law matters - you’re going to have to explain exactly the correspondence you have received with more detail for us to be able to assist you.

Please be aware that fraudulently using a Child’s ticket with the intent to avoid payment of the full fare is a criminal offence for which you can be prosecuted.

No company has to issue a Penalty Fare. That is completely at their discretion and would normally take place at the time that the issue is detected. You could challenge the £80 demand (which is likely a sum to settle the issue not a fine as only Courts can issue those) but if you do the company has every right to prosecute you.

Frankly you really don't want that as your "error" means that they have you bang to rights and it absolutely will cost you more than £80.

Just out of curiosity, how much was the full adult fare that you hadn't paid?

They probably went down that route as to be bluntly honest holding a child ticket is quite an unlikely accident.

That they've offered you an out of court settlement of 'only' £80 shows that they are being pretty reasonable.

There is no formal appeal process with an out of court settlement- if you refuse to pay it or quibble they will likely take you to court, win and leave you with a larger fine to pay.

I feel sorry for you having to pay £80 but I’d say it’s “pretty good value for money” in terms of out of court settlement. Often see three figures settlement on the forum for avoiding a few quid.
