The 508's were introduced to WD during 1979-80 ish. Congestion in WD is nothing new, as someone who was involved in the planning to out berth withdrawn 4 Sub's from same to locations various. A couple of notes I made on 10 Feb 1980: At Basing units 508002, 026 & 027 were stored (Up West yard if my memory is correct), units 508009, 013 & 014 were at VZ (Strawberry Hill) and at WD, units 508003, 005, 010, 011, 016, 018, 019, 020, 021, 022, 024, 025, 028 & 029 were present. By 23 Feb, WD's 508 collection consisted of units 005, 008, 009, 010, 011, 012, 014, 018, 019, 022, 023, 024, 025, 030 & 031. Roll on 1983, October 30th to be precise, and amongst a number of Mersey Rail units stored at Birkenhead Central depot (BC) also noted were 508's 010 & 017.

Ah, the 455's as new! They were all new to the SWD as far as I recall, only later (when exactly?) did some migrate to SU. My involvement with SU was prior to then, all Sub's and a few EPB's afraid !

That's correct, all started life at Wimbledon. The transfer to Selhurst was done in two or three batches over a period of time.

There were certainly some on the Central Division by 1985 as that was the year I had my first ride on one, from Clapham Junction to Beckenham Junction.

If it helps, the following units which were in use in February, have not so far appeared on RTT in March. Therefore all have been out of passenger use for almost a month, if not longer.

458502 (26/02)

Probably as the batteries would be quite flat.I know they did cut the batteries out on 455's at Waterloo as I got caught out one morning and a driver told me why when I couldn't cut the unit in.Hadn't encountered that at Waterloo before.Also EMU's do have Main Res.

Yes my mate said he saw 8 455 go past Millbrook this afternoon so I would say it was U.5859 & U.5912.

I noticed that 458532 was back in use yesterday morning, although its absence for a few days over a month is minor when compared to 504 & 535!

In todays world perhaps, but back in pre computer days, the Carriage Working Notices (and Short term plan alterations there to) didn't show TID's (ie: 1Axx, 5Yxx or whatever), just departure time/destination and origin time/place and arrival time, and platform numbers at London termini (eg Waterloo). These documents formed the basis from which staff on the ground worked, including signallers who used same to prepare their box simplifiers - which in essence contained the same info, but in a format that signallers preferred to use (not necessarily the same at two adjacent boxes either).

Just curious, but why would 458533 be going to Widnes? I thought it was 501-528 that were being converted to 4-car units and not the ex-460 units, but I expect that is my mis-understanding.

Sorry, yes, you are right it is one of the ex Gat-Ex units. Long Marston bound then.

Following its return from Bournemouth, 455859 is back in passenger service today (2D09) for the first time since 28/02.

455907+455918 were also last in passenger use on 28/02 but were moved to Clapham Yard on 30/03, although since then they do not appear to have done anything. At one point 455907 was reported to be low on miles, so perhaps they are now stored at Clapham Yard?

Messroom gossip seems to suggest there’s suddenly an issue with 455s going to Bournemouth. It sounds like they’ve quietly been removed from the SA.
