Ignore. Responded to the wrong post.

Looking at the rail time there have been four runs today all on time. All run by Colas.

Well, that's nice, but I'm unsure why these runs have happened (after a significantly long break) except to think the ROSCO concerned is now trying to minimise its contractual loss, which speaks volumes.

I'm trying to think of a another reason why GWR driver-trainers were not at the controls on these runs, but am struggling to think of it.

Then there has been the platform lengthenings and the very large zone 1-4 signs painted on the platforms (sometimes wrongly).
Zone markings appear to be unconnected to 769s, as they're appearing on the Portsmouth direct as well. They don't correlate with train length either, as Godalming has 11 zones (train lengths can be 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 or 12 coaches).
And a two-hour service gap for departures from Reading, between 21:34 and 23:34, almost seems to be designed to persuade those travelling back from further afield in the evenings to decide to drive instead.

Just restore the old timetable that was crafted over many years. It worked well. Get on with it.
To make that worse, the absence of the old 23:45 from Waterloo means that the 23:34 off Reading no longer connects with a Portsmouth train at Guildford.
The last train from Reading connecting to the southern end of the Direct is the 21:34.

On the NDL, platforms are marked out for four car trains, so 769s would seem the obvious candidate, as no trains on the route are currently longer than three cars. Does Godalming have SDO?

No, both platforms can accommodate 12 coach trains (3x450s). On both platforms zone 1 is at the north end and zone 11 at the south, so zone 1 is at the front of up trains and the rear of down trains. The markings have been painted within the last couple of weeks, but I've seen no mention so far of what they're supposed to signify.

That is correlating with train lengths. 12-450 = 11-444. 11 carriages is the maximum length for most EMU (23m) carriages. 450s are shorter than normal.

But in neither case will zone 11 line up with coach 11 - on the up side, with 12-450 zone 11 will be roughly opposite coach 12, with 10-444 it will either be opposite coach 10 or off the end of the train. I'm not sure how they will line up for 5-444 or 8-450, since I haven't checked how the zone markers align with the various stop boards. On the down side, the zones are in the opposite order to coach numbers.

Actually there are more 20m EMUs than 23m EMUs both nationally and on SWR services so 450s are not shorter than 'normal'.

You're welcome - trains being "dragged" is just a term that irritates me, as if the brakes are locked on!;)
Shhh, it is a 769 - don't curse it!

I'm surprised a broken unit is being hauled away for storage in Long Marston, than going to somewhere like Wabtec or Wolverton for repair though. It just to me at least, shows the lack of urgency or impetus to get the fleet into traffic.

You clearly weren't around the West Midlands in the 1980s and 1990s. Diesel haulage of electric trains between New St and Nuneaton was universally known in the enthusiast community as "the drags".

I'm going to be travelling up and down the North Downs Line at the weekend, any chance of seeing any 769s even if just parked up on sidings somewhere?

Highly unlikely I'm afraid, they're likely to be hiding away in the depths of Reading depot.
They usually only venture out M/W/F, and by no means always even then.

It seems they have class 5 reporting codes for the first time having been class 3 up to now, although they are also obfuscated.
It's Colas operating them this week, so it'll be down to their train planning team to decide what headcodes to use.

I saw 769959 running on Friday and it made heavy weather of the climb through Chilworth, doing no better than the following steam-hauled 'Belmond Pullman' working, when 'Clan Line' had around 600 tons in tow!

They are underpowered in diesel but the sectional running times reflect that. Unfortunately 319's don't get away that well on DC so can't make it back on the juice either.
