Hi all,

In a couple of weeks I need to travel from Doncaster to York, and then a couple of days later travel from York to Wakefield, and then later in the day, Wakefield back to Doncaster. The outbound journey will be off-peak (10:30ish), but I will need to do the York to Wakefield stint at around 8am.

Am I correct in thinking that the Anytime Short Distance Return at £28.60 will be best option for me? There's an Off Peak Return at a couple of quid cheaper, but that wouldn't cover my 8am start from York would it (peak time)? Advance tickets are no good, as there aren't any YRK-WKF available at that time.

Also - it says any route permitted - so I'm assuming I could do the direct DON-YRK ECML route on the outbound journey and not have to go via Wakefield both ways?

Many thanks in advance!

An Anytime Short Distance Return (SHR) would be suitable for your journey as you correctly identify. York to Doncaster tickets are valid via the direct ECML route, as well as via Wakefield & Leeds, or via Selby.

The Off-Peak Return (SVR) has restriction code 3V, meaning it's not valid on trains departing before 09:30. So this wouldn't be much use for your York to Wakefield journey.

It may be that there is a cheaper option available if you split somewhere en-route, albeit I expect this would only be the case if there are Advances involved.

Trainsplit.com will be able to determine the cheapest option; you can use the advanced search options to enter via Wakefield for the return journey, and specify an increased interchange time of 99 minutes, to force a long wait at Wakefield.

If you haven’t already done so download the LNER app and use it to book your tickets. You’ll get a fiver off.
