Would that have been on the once legendary 09:35 Paddington > Penzance jumbo train, that was a rock solid pair of 50s during part of the 80s?

It may well have been at one time, but not when I did these trips. Solid HST's all the way, and a jolly good thrash they were too....:D:D

I seem to recall the 0935 at this time was only a Plymouth train from Paddington, indeed in the summer there was a 0950 Paignton service which I got once as a 50+stock from Paddington but the memory gets a bit hazy unfortunately.

Best day???

Have done SUN-KGX-SUN-YRK-SUN all on Valenta GC HST's before in a day.

Another good HST day was EC HST NTR-EDB, EC HST EDB-YRK, XC HST YRK-LDS and EC HST LDS-SKI...

Probably it because I don't bashing much, mainly staying on station.

Doing the afternoon Brighton - Edinburgh from Coventry to Carstairs for the 1B29 portion to Edinburgh for two weeks straight (on an out of date All Line Rover (!)). I'd leave school, get to Northampton station to pick up the EMU to Cov, for a tight connection onto the Sussex Scot.

I used to love looking out of the window on the approach to Cartairs to see what diesel was waiting on the curve to take us to Edinburgh. Had numerous 26's and 37's, but 37508 was the best I had.

Upon arrival into Edinburgh, I'd take my seat on the Edinburgh - Euston, where I'd sleep all the way to Rugby which would connect nicely onto my train to Northampton. I'd then pop home, have a bath and go off to school again, before starting the same move again at 3.30!

For me, I think, the InterCity Diesel Day on the Midland Main Line ranks very highly.

Quite agree it was an excellent day (well 27 hours).

My moves for the day were
08690 - (shunted sleeping car and Mk2 BSO onto 1M11 Glasgow - Euston sleeper at Carlisle)
85010 Carlisle - Preston (1M11)
47??? Preston - Crewe (1M11)
86410 Crewe - Euston (dragged by 47520 Bletchley - Euston Downside)

33021+33022 St Pancras - Wellingborough
56017 Wellingborough - Luton
37058 Luton - Leicester
20228+20145 Leicester - Wellingborough
56017 Wellingborough - Leicester
58050 Leicester - Wellingborough
20145 (with failed 20228) Wellingborough - Leicester
37058+37066 Leicester - St Pancras and St Pancras - Luton

EMU Luton - St Pancras
87031 Euston - Carlisle (arrive 0426)

Oh those WERE the days! I remember seeing them throb past Dawlish sea wall; never got behind a jumbo, mind. Best I managed was a pair of Hoovers on the Paddington-Oxford. 6 mk1 bogies, 5400 horses - and a large grin out the front vestibule the entire way...

I remember being introduced to the jumbos by my dad. He hadn't told me what was going to happen and we turned up at Paddington on 9th December 1984 for the 09:35, with 50002 and 50009 up front. I nearly messed my pants with excitement when I saw them, and had my head out for Mickey Mouse mileage all the way to Reading! The day wasn't about haulage, but he managed to get the jumbo in as a means to make a great day even better (next move: Thumper to Basingstoke - great times indeed!).

And fine memories of '88: travelling up from Euston to Glasgow on the sleeper, turning up at Eastfield, clutching cameras and hi-vis vests, politely asking the foreman if we could take photos from where we were.

He told us no way - since we'd come that far, we'd be better spending an hour or two having a proper look round. And the same response from Springburn's foreman too.

Not even a depot pass! Mutual trust and respect went a long way in those days.

If I may venture one further bash I remember well was the 24 hour journey from Thurso to Penzance which I started from Newcastle.

The only train I had to make sure I got was the overnight Edinburgh - Inverness service then everything should have slotted into place. So to get to Edinburgh for 2300 from Newcastle of course I left Newcastle just before lunch time then went via Kings Cross. Everything went OK and got into Edinburgh in plenty of time for the overnighter to Inverness. Got into Inverness before 5am and then had a wander around the town until the service to the far north left at about 0630.

The original plan was to go to Wick not Thurso as it was a few miles further but on this particular day there were engineering works between Georgemas Jn and Wick or a failed 37 or something so instead of dividing at Georgemas the 37 ran round and the whole train went to Thurso, so I did too. Got into Thurso at about 1100 and left for Penzance at 1200 sharp. Got back to Inverness in time for the afternoon service to Edinburgh then took the overnight service to Bristol, then a morning HST to Penzance. I remember the train should have arrived at Penzance at 1158 meaning a 23h58m journey time but it was a bit late and arrived at 1215.

After stretching the legs for a few minutes or so in Penzance I took a train to Paddington at about 1230 then tube to Kings Cross and then the 1800 up to Newcastle getting in at about 2130.

All in all an absolutely cracking day's bash with a couple of extras thrown in.

I did something very like this, in early 1985. Started at York, and didn't go via London first (got an evening HST northbound after my dad had finished work). Went on the cushions to Inverness (04:50 arrival!) and wandered around for ages in the freezing cold until the 06:35 'Orcadian'. Got 37264 and 37175 (on the branch). My Lordz!

Southbound got a roarer on the sleeper (cushions again) between Carstairs and New Street, and a Peak onwards. Then as you the AM Paddington > Bristol > Penzance tram the rest of the way, and the same route back to York. Fantastic!

Here's me thinking I was the only loony to try such a trip. I did my trip in about 1985 or 1986 (well it was definitely middle to late 80's) too I think so the times are pretty much the same.
Thinking back I do remember it being a clear moonlit night and heading up on the overnighter to Inverness was simple eerie going over the moors.

On a train somewhere in Europe
Had one of my best days bashing only last Sunday, and it started out with a "bowl out" - in Switzerland of all places.

Caught a train from Baar to Luzern, intending to try and find my last passenger sector Re4/4 for haulage that had been recently reported on the "Voralpen Express" circuit between there and Romanshorn and my last Zentralbahn class 101 loco.

Two miles down the road, we were unceremoniously turfed off the train at Zug due to some sort of electrical farce at Rotkreuz, couldn't determine whether it was signalling or OHL related. Straight to plan B which was the local unit to Arth-Goldau and a long fester in the minus temperatures for our intended train to catch us up.

Whilst waiting, the 0611 Chiasso to Zürich appeared with an Re4/4 on it; out of habit I checked the number, not expecting it to be 11132 but, even better, it was freight sector 11331 :D

En route to Zürich, I texted a friend (who, as it turned out also needed 11331!) and in reply was told what the elusive 11132 was doing and what the two freight sector Re4/4s were on the Zürich / München ECs were, both required as well.

Much thumbing of the timetable enabled a move to St. Gallen to be sorted to claim one of the EC locos and 11132 to be headed off at Brugg, but en route to St.Gallen I spotted two of my last 5 Re460 locos :o

Once safely behind 421 384, more frantic shuffling of loco diagrams and timetable followed and a move was worked out to get the other Cargo Re4/4 and the two 460s I had seen. Fortunately the latter were on fairly short runs which could be intercepted, if they had gone off to somewhere like Geneva Airport or Brig things would have been a lot more difficult to work out.

Just as I was thinking things could not get any better, another text arrived with gen of what two of my, by now, three remaining 460s were doing and they could be got by a short return journey to Winterthur - one out for the other back :p

460 087 was duly scored after a rather rushed meal, but the last move of the day let me down as what should have been 460 099 turned out to be 066 :( It turned out that my mates gen had been correct, but 099 was running late into Zürich and had been replaced by an alternative set, proved on arrival back at Zürich when we were all told to change to the train on the opposite platform which was worked by 099, patiently waiting to carry on with the last part of it's diagram for the day.

Unfortunately, it was right-away Bern and, had I jumped on board, I might not have got back to my hotel that night. However, it was a fairly easy matter to pick the loco up a couple of days later by following the diagrams round.

TBH I have had days when far more locos have been scored, but few to match this one when everything fell nicely into place after a forced change of direction blew my plans apart on the first move of the day.

I think my ultimate round trips were from about 1995 - I didn't know the types back then so might not be 100% accurate but I was more doing for the scenery :)

Interlaken West -> Thun: ICE1
Thun -> Brig: I think it was an 1970s Re 4/4 either the BLS or SBB flavour. BLS were renting SBB locos pending more of their Re465s arriving
Brig -> Disentis Munster: Furka Oberalp HGe 4/4
Disentis Munster -> Chur: RhB Ge 4/4
Chur -> Zurich: SBB Re 460
Zurich -> Luzern: SBB Re 460
Luzern -> Meringen: SBB HGe 4/4
Meiringen -> Interlaken Ost: SBB Deh 4/6
Interlaken Ost -> West: BLS Re465

Then there was the trip into Italy involving a ride on a rammed FART* railcar

*Yes really - it stands for Rail and Buses in Ticano Region - or rather the itallian words for that :) - the initials were displayed proudly on the units.

Cracking it was indeed! I also remember the lonely growl of the duff as we laboured north from Carrbridge across the moors in the dark. Seriously atmospheric. Also atmospheric is this picture of 37175 steaming away nicely at Thurso that winter's day not long after my 14th birthday. Aah! Happy times.

I've spent most of my life trying to find a railway system called FART. Well, at least since 1984 when the DART opened and gave me the idea. I'd even thought of writing to the Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramway to suggest rebranding as Fylde Area Rapid Transit (and hope that they wouldn't realise what I was up to). So thanks for bringing this Italian FART to my attention! All we need now is a photo.......

I don't 'Bash' locos or units usually but I have had a couple of good days out. The first memorable experience for me was a trip out to Crewe with my grandfather. We sat down on a Loco-hauled service to Liverpool (typical virgin this is) with a blunt-end facing DVT+90+87 on the rear and an 86 up front. Had this for haulage to Crewe. After an enjoyable few hours it was time to go home. It was around 6 in the evening and we had returned to find 47810 burbling away on one of the platforms coupled to a DVT with 9 Mark 3's and two dead 87's on the rear. Our service pulled in which was a Pendolino. We sat there for 10 minutes before it was announced the set had failed and that we were to catch the train on platform 5. Got to platform 5 and then pretty much jumped up and down with excitement at the fact we were going to have a 47 all the way back to London (bearing in mind I was 9 at the time and had never ridden behind a 47 before). The thrash from 47810 was brilliant and we were diverted via Bescot so we picked up 11 37's! We called at Rugby, and then we ran non-stop to Euston, we absolutely tore through Berkhamsted overtaking various 321's. Never had a ride like that before in my life. The second best time I've had was a ride down to Southampton in the last days of the slammers which was deputising for a 442 on a Weymouth service. Had a CEP+CIG for traction, and decided to ride in the CEP with a noisy compressor. Lovely. And then after Woking we were on the fasts overtaking some 450's, really showing them who was still boss arriving at Southampton about 5 minutes early if I remember correctly. Lastly I enjoyed (but also felt disappointed) having a final few runs on 1498 in early May just before it was taken out of service. These experiences don't compare to most of the ones you guys have shared with us, but I've enjoyed them all the same. :)

Its a joint Swiss/Italian operation running from Domoldossola in Italy to Locano in Switzerland.

Might be all units, but it is a wonderfully scenic railway.

I was considering a round trip via the Gotthard, FART and Lötschberg routes last week as it is some time since I last did this trip however, other matters took precedence this time.

When I started this thread it was about loco bashing, but it's moved onto more general gricing experiences. I did a couple of themed mega-bashes in the early '90s while a student in Northern Ireland.

The first was The Five Capitals, which took me from Belfast York Road to Larne Harbour on a 450 class DEMU. Then 08:00 boat to Stranraer and a 156 to Ayr. A 318 to Glasgow for a walk across to Queen Street and a 158 to Edinburgh. Took the 15:00 tram all the way to the Cross (incidentally the only time I've ever ridden the ECML from end to end), before crossing to Paddington for the 20:00 tram to Cardiff. Stayed in a B&B before getting up early for a 37 hauled train to Crewe. A duff to Holyhead on a train from Euston and the nightmare Dun Laoghaire boat. DART to Dublin Connolly and a 6-car 80 class substituting for the usual 111 class + stock on the 20:15 to Belfast Central (bailed at Botanic). 40 hours from Belfast to Belfast.

The next one was much more ambitious. A positioning move on Sunday afternoon on the 15:00 Belfast > Dublin as far as Dundalk where I sayed with a friend (notes show a 111 class + NIR stock on this working, which was a bowling as it was supposed to be an Irish Rail working and the only booked 001 class of the week :(). Next morning on a 121 propelled push-pull working to Dublin Tara Street station and the long walk along the Quays to Heuston. Took the 09:00 071 hauled mk IIIs all the way to Tralee (the most Westerly railway node in the British Isles). Came back with this set as far as Limerick Junction, before wandering across country with the then daily train to Waterford and Rosslare (141 class plus 2 decrepit coaches + steam generator van). Overnight boat to Fishguard and then the Paddington HST as far as Swindon. An hour to wait before a 158 all the way to Penzance (most Southerly point). Same 158 back to Plymouth and a tram onwards to Paddington. A lovely old 312 from Liverpool St to Colchester Town, where I kipped in the Youth Hostel. Next morning took a train the short hop to Colchester and another 312 to Ipswich. 156 to Lowestoft (Easterly), and the same set to Norwich. Got on a 158 intending to bail at Peterborough, but disaster struck on this train. The intention was to take a tram north to Edinburgh, then another one to Dundee where a friend of mine lived. Unfortunately I fell asleep and woke as the set was pulling out of Peterborough (does anyone else remember the very quiet announcements on 158s when new?). I quickly consulted the timetable and found I couldn't get to Dundee that day, so stayed on to Sheffield, and took a duff hauled NESW working to York and stayed at my parents' house instead. Next problem was now that I wouldn't be able to get to Thurso that day, and was now half a day behind schedule. Took the morning Aberdeen HST to Edinburgh, then north to Inverness, and a 156 on to Helmsdale on the evening train. I had planned to be staying at Helmsdale Youth Hostel on the southbound leg, having already been to Thurso. Next morning continued to Thurso, and then back to Inverness, all the way mourning the demise of 37s on this route. Back to Glasgow and then on to Stranraer for a 3 hour fester before the 03:00 boat (would have been on the much more civilised 19:00 the previous day had I not overslept at Peterborough). Last leg was an 80 class (unusual on the Larne line at that time) on the 06:20 to Belfast York Road.

I think if you'd said 55010 it might have been clearer. It was 1979 after all. Did you insist on paying for the trip in pounds, shillings and pence? ;)

Hi Guys

Interesting posts, all of which I have enjoyed reading.

The best day out bashing I ever had was in 1995 when I went from Bangor to Loughborough.

The trains were a class 37 and mark twos from Bangor to Stafford, a class 309 from Stafford to New Street, a 158 from New Street to Leicester, and finally a "Res" class 47 on the 1720 St Pancras-Derby from Leicester to Loughborough.

All the above achieved 100mph during their leg of the journey.

I could go into more detail if anyone is interested...
