EMR Class 170 refurbishment

Hello,

Wondering if anyone knows if or when the EMR 170s will be getting refurbished? They've been in service with EMR for a while now and still have threadbare ScotRail seats etc.

Not for a while. Until all of the units are transferred there's not enough slack in the fleet to release any.

It won't happen until the debacle with the Class 196 units is resolved.

Never at this rate! If the 360 refurbishment progress (or lack of it) is anything to go by and if the DfT penny pinch, I doubt the 170s would get anything more than a deep clean and replacement seat covers.

Also, as others have said, external circumstances which EMR have no control over (eg 196 situation) have made refurbishments impossible.

They could have retained a couple of the 156s that have already gone to Northern to cover for refurbishment of those 170s they do have, had DfT given permission.

Give it a few years yet before that happens considering EMR haven't had the rest of the 170s yet from WMR because we still have no 196s in service yet.

My gut feeling (no sources or insider knowledge, solely my personal thoughts) is that the 196s enter service in late 2023 (given that the delay is bound to drag on and on and on), 170/5 transfer to EMR is complete by early 2024 and 170 refurbishment commences in mid-2024. I may stake a £5 bet down the bookies

196s are meant to be entering traffic in May I believe, rather belatedly. The 170s I suspect will start to move over fairly sharpish once they do so as I believe Tyseley is just about full.
