Railwayana of any type from Sunderland pre 1966 (new station) is extremely hard to get! It had orange enamel "running in boards" but none of these have ever turned up.
The large enamels were actually cut in half horizontally and used in someone's back garden as a border for plants. I made a frame and repaired one but the other I have just photoshopped.
Supposedly in the late 60's somebody found some "brand new" unused Totems for West Hartlepool station in a room at Sunderland but I don't know if this is true or an "urban myth".

Reminds me of something one of our lads at work told me recently... when he worked for a previous company he and another driver were shown into a basement room beneath Bristol Temple Meads station, they couldn't believe their eyes as it was full of chocolate and cream enamel signs for the whole station (totems, running in boards, the lot), plus a few of the older GWR wooden type as well.

Back in 2003 I did a similar thing at Rugby, I found an intact (but sadly empty) British Railways Hotels whiskey bottle with a tartan 'Royal Scot' label on it. It must have been down there since the early 60s! It sits in my book cupboard along with a few other trinkets.

I have a collector friend and he says he met a railwayman who on learning my friend was a collector said "Oh! You should have met Mr X who died a few years ago. He had a garage full of orange enamel signs off the North Tyneside Loop". What happened to the stuff my friend asked? "Oh the council cleared his house out and it all went to a landfill site!" the guy replied.

Given that wooden church pews are more comfortable than 313 seats, what possessed the chap to even WANT the things at home...!

Question is how did he at the time get the seats out of Hornsey, you can't exactly hide one under a jacket can you?

Sounds quite a character though!

I'm talking about 1983. The railway was strange place then. I had to work an empty train from Hornsey to Hertford North at about 01.00 and my driver turned up as drunk as a skunk! I couldn't really shop him (especially being a "new boy") so I had to travel up front and keep an eye on him and the signals, and keep him talking so he didn't fall asleep.
Anything went then.

BTW I always remember when the famous NSE red metal seats were delivered to KX. They were stacked up near the former parcels bay. One day a couple of guys arrived in a van and said to the BR guy "we're here for the seats mate" and he replied "Nice one!". They took the seats away and were never seen again.....

Yes, I know how strange the railway was back then, I've been told many tales of how different it was back then so I do know where you're coming from.

Hi,

I have an old LU Charing Cross Station Sign (Northern Line) which I got back in the 1970s. I've been trying to find sites where I can get a valuation for it. Can anyone help?

You would've thought I would've mentioned this when I opened the thread...

My pap saved someone's life at Motherwell one day and he, my gran and me were given all kinds of goodies from ScotRail of the day, including a trip to Yoker depot. While there, I got shown around the depot (even remember watching a 320 go for a shower). The folks there gave me a wooden trainset and a BR styled hat with the double arrow logo.

I still have the hat, though it's too wee to fit now.

I would say it is £35-40. Each Underground station had a large number of these signs and they weren't very old so they are not worth a huge amount of money.
The original Underground "Roundel" signs with brass edges are worth an enormous amount of money especially if they are from somewhere like Piccadilly Circus.

I picked up an NSE Platform 4 sign, that would hang down on a platform. Have no idea where it could be from though! That along with a huge book collection and old timetables/advertising would be about it!

well that in one sentence automatically out strips anything written in this topic! You don't need a plaque or a name plate to go top of the tree with that!

I have a RAILTRACK standards book. GO/RT3011 Personalised Rule Book Number 11 that I found in a container full of paperwork that we cleared out. It was printed in August 1999 and contains all the standards and procedures for Persons in charge of working on Railway Infrastructure. Pretty neat find.

In my nice Cosy Signal Box :)
I have managed to acquire and pass on items through my local model railway club. In our club we have items we have salvaged from various places ranging from skips to going to NR themselves.

some items include former block instruments from LNWR WCML out of Euston from the 1950' and 60's. (Used on our O gauge layout)
Signal box name from Northolt East Jnc (Now South Ruislip)
Lower Quadrant Distant Signal from Northolt East Jnc
Various Railway items mainly signage from the former big four and few other railway items.

Out of interest, were those seats just made for the NSE area because if so I notice a few have migrated up here to Yorkshire (although still in railway use)?

I'm pretty sure they were just ordered from some large scale manufacturer. The North Eastern Railway was known for it's "Serpent" seats but they can be seen in Wales because they were stock items from a catalogue.

In the late seventies I visited a friend at Canterbury university and the driver out of London seemed intent on breaking place to place records between stations and overshooting most in between by a coach or two.

The red faced guard marshalled passengers down the train but could offer no explanation for the 'mishaps'. I often wonder whether the driver had partaken of a solid lunchtime session somewhere beforehand. Back on topic I heard of a chap who owned almost all the enamel bridge signs for a branch to discover his work colleague had the missing one and wouldn't let it go.

While on a school trip to London my mate pointed out a woman had dropped her phone onto the track (Gloucester Road Eastbound Picc platform) and was going to pick it up. I yelled at her not to, got some teachers involved and between them they managed to send her on her way.

I got a letter from the Chief Constable of LU branch of the BTP, a BTP Parker Pen and a letter from Gordon Brown

FWIW; I've got plenty of Irish railway tickets, rule books, working time-tables, parcel stamps, Irish rail chairs not the type you sit on, a length of bull-head rail, various passenger coach plates.
BR working time-tables, instruction books, more tickets including one numbered 0000 and another numbered 6387, the reg number of my first motorcycle.

A 1940's East India Railway Time-table and this little gem in the photo below;

Particulary since Railtrack never seemed to have any standards. <D

I've been told i'm to inherit a large number of NER and BR tools both sets stamped originaly by NER and / or BR.
A number of wickham trolley engine parts, a number of components for a diesel-electric crane (maybe wrong).
Original BR tool stamps, some other NER gear (not sure what)
Some old railway paraffin lamps.

I've seen a number of these items, not going to say where they are ofcourse.

They are currently in my father-in-laws possesion, he's x-BR engine shed staff (Green Street, Darlington shed)
He did intend to give them on to his own kids, but all have said they don't want them.
If they recieve them they'd sell them in an auction, once he had passed away.

Once we both descovered we were both into trains, and ofcourse me marrying his duaghter.
He has stated (not in writting) that he would like all of the railway gear to come to me.
I volunteer at NRM Shildon as and when i can, i told him anything i can't use or store practically. I'd donate to the NRM and he seems happy enough about that, rather then it being sold / wieghed in.

So that me :)

Why not give them to the Tanfield Railway? They'd appreciate them and probably use them.
I knew the former curator of the NRM and he gave a few tours of their warehouse - if you saw the mind boggling amount of historic gear they have stashed away which NEVER goes on public view you'd know what I mean.

An almost infinite number of timetables (including some paid for and Working examples) aside, all I have is a sign from a Rail Replacement operation my dad ran last year (or possibly the year before) on the Central Line out towards West Ruislip...

Wagon plate from a Shildon built HAA hopper. Nice bit of local history. Also a Regional Railways hi-viz (bought for a visit to Booths in Rotehrham), some tea mugs and other Metro branded crap.
