EMR class 156s for Northern

156412 was on the 0832 Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly today. On arrival it departed at 0950 to Newton Heath Depot.
RTT shows it as due tu leave Newton Heath at 1903 to form the 1915 from Manchester Victoria to Wigan NW via Atherton.

Maybe there’s too much uncertainty about but a direct quote conveyed to user groups about the ex-EMR 156s is “We are due to receive more in March (number currently uncertain) which will allow us to strengthen existing services”. The uncertain number may turn out to be zero if West Midlands don’t get any of their 196s into traffic. Are there any units bound for Northern currently at Wolverton?

The two units currently at Wolverton go straight back to EMR as 156/4's on completion albeit in Northern base colours. And whatever the direct quote was, it's wrong.

Ex.EMR 156401 on Manchester - Buxton route today (Tuesday 8th February 2022) working with 156425. The first time in a while anything other than a 150/1 has been on the route other than the occasional Sunday service. Also 156402 working with a 150/2. Is the random unit generator back?

Depends on when the 196s come into service with WMR, which will enable the 170/5s to be released to EMR. This will then have the domino effect of more 156s going across to Northern. EMR is already short of regional stock as it is; so can ill afford to release any more 156s.

As for when this will happen, who knows?! The 196 saga has gone on for what seems like aeons and probably will for some time yet.

In issue 230 of Railways Illustrated it says all of EMRs 156s will be transferred to Northern, so does anyone know if plans have changed, because originally Northern were only going to take 15 of them?
Secondly, it also states that 156418 has already been transferred, even though it only entered Wolverton on the 12th March, so does this mean its going straight to Northern when its refurbishment has been completed?

Still originally the 15 but there is an option to take a further 4 so I'm told.

And the answer to your second question is no, 418 returns to EMR once it comes out of Wolverton.

156402 and 156415 were both working on the CLC yesterday. Today 156401 and 156415 are on the CLC.

Finally caught up with 156402 today working on the Southport to Stalybridge service. It was the last 156 that I needed to ride.

Slightly off topic, but apparently they'll be 2 Northern 156s on hire to EMR this Saturday (16th) to run 6 car services through the Hope Valley.
Firstly: Does anyone know anything about it and is it just to boost capacity for Easter?
Secondly: Are these units definitely staying with Northern, not coming back to EMR?

1. It is true, the units will be attached at Lime Street, to strengthen two services. It is just a one off for Saturday to boost capacity
2. This is only a one off arrangement for this Saturday

These 6 car services will run express between Lime Street and Manchester Oxford Road, due to short platforms en route.

This is just a one-off. It's because of expected passenger volumes over the Hope Valley, due to TPE being on strike and Liverpool/Manchester fans travelling to the FA match in London via Sheffield or Doncaster due to WCML closures.

Looks like one or two 156's could be hired in today as well.

We've arranged for some of our trains between Liverpool and Nottingham to have extra coaches today. 07:42 Liverpool to Norwich 09:51 Liverpool to Norwich 16:51 Liverpool to Nottingham We have removed some stops from these services so please check your journey before you travel.
