Hi all - today I travelled in the peak into Paddington and arrived into platform 12.

The location of the gateline causes such a bottleneck as customers attempt to tap out - it’s located a couple of carriages up the platform, so customers in the first 2 carriages need to double back and then try and work their way into the queue of other passengers.

It was madness today. Those with bikes trying to head to the disabled gate, others trying to push through.

Has anyone else experienced this? Surely it would make more sense to place the gateline at the end of the platform, or stop the train a little short so no double-backing of passengers is needed.

The escalators for the taxi rank above and the Hammersmith & City/Circle line station are in the way. Platforms 11 and 12 are being shortened, so that the bufferstops are aligned with platforms 1-10. I've not been to Paddington this year, but when I was last there in 2021, there were hoardings around that worksite.

The platform 11 gateline will surely be rearranged as it no longer needs to face the platform.

You could probably stick a few more where the glass barrier is at Platform 12, but ultimately there isn't that much space. The issue is normally too many on exit/entry against whichever the main flow is which is because the gateline staff aren't being observant and/or responsive enough. You just need to be savvy that the front carriage of a TfL service from Reading/Maidenhead is not the best to alight from - instead move down one carriage a and you'd be fine.

Still are as its protecting the basically crumbling brickwork above supporting the access road to St Mary's hospital and some of the arches.

Thanks for the update.

I suppose you could alternatively head towards platform 14 and go through the gateline in the long overbridge at the country end, it's usually a much quieter route across the station.

To a very significant extent this issue will be resolved when the TfL trains transmogrify to Elizabeth Line ones and don't terminate at Paddington any more.
