My in-laws have advance tickets from Edinburgh to Birmingham next weekend, with a two-together railcard.

Today, one of them has tested positive for Covid. I thought that the normal "no refunds" policy for advances had been waived due to Covid, but googling this only gave me https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations_destinations/coronavirus_refunds.aspx which says the page was archived on 12th January. I presume this is when the covid rules (including the requirement to self-isolate following a positive test) ended in England.

As this requirement is still in place in Scotland, are refunds of advance tickets still possible where one end of the journey is north of the border?

You should follow the link to "Advance Tickets" within the "This page has been archived" box on the page you mentioned. The top of that page contains information about the 'Book with Confidence' scheme, which I think is what you are looking for. (Basically, the answer is a refund is possible, but you will have to contact wherever the tickets were bought in order to work out exactly how to go about it).

For the refund, they will need to go back to the retailer of their tickets. There is no geographical restriction to the Book with Confidence scheme.

Who did they book the tickets with and they book them online or at a ticket office or over the phone? We need to know the name of the retailer or train company they purchase the tickets from.

As long as the tickets are cancelled by 18:00 the day before travel it may be possible to receive a refund by way of a paper or electronic Rail travel voucher, which will be valid for a further 12-months.

Dunno how I missed that! I think I just saw the "this page has been archived" and assumed the worst - that the special provision for during covid had ended

They went in person to the ticket office at Edinburgh Waverley. Fortunately only one of them has covid, so the other will be allowed to go and get a refund - I'll pass on the details, thanks.

The book with Confidence scheme applies to any Advance tickets booked before the deadline of 31st of March 2022. You do not have to get covid in order to use the scheme. We simply have to decide that you do not wish to travel. Then you let the train company know by 1800 the day before travel.
