Class 365 scrap movements + preservation discussion

Okay, so here are my predictions, while the 5 365s are going to scrap in Newport, I doubt that 525 will be joining with Network Rail or Rail Operations Group as a ETRMS Train (just like the one on the class 313. [121]) but there could be a chance.

Which means that 525 and 121 will be working together in Network Rail, but we have to better wait for the news to come. (Hope so)

Unless you work for Eversholt, Alstom or ESG, it won’t be possible to say what the working state of unit 525 is. Nor is there any point in speculating on its future yet.

Guessing those will be the final 365 scrap runs (provided 525 doesn’t follow suit and two runs aren’t two units at a time)

The latest RAIL issue had a small item at the end about what will be in the next issue, where Howard Johnston will be looking back at the short life of the 365s (and possibly other short-lived EMUs as well). Howard Johnston is the same person who bought the carriages being preserved at the EKR.

Also the one that I last used the Sunday before the last ever service. The other two units on that service though are long gone of course (502 and 522).

Strictly speaking, that's a drag. The Cl365 has it's pan down.

This was the normal modus operandii for transferring these units from Hornsey to the Ilford wheel lathe. Typically the drag would be done by a Cl317 but all units had the same couplers and brake and control wires on the same pins to ensure limited compatibility for ECS and assistance movements so anything handy could be used. During one period of blockage on the NLL during FCC's tenure these moves had to run via Cambridge which gave the unusual sight of them being dragged along the WA route.

Hornsey has its own wheel lathe, class 365s didn't need to go anywhere else for a wheel lathe. Hornsey wheel lathe did work on the GA fleet for Ilford, not the other way round.

Class 365s went to Ilford for various reasons, but predominantly for C4 wheelset overhauls. Various PRM modifications were also done at Ilford.

They were dragged until 2016. As you say, this was usually by a class 317, but after 2009 the dragging unit could also be a class 321. There was a gauge issue too which required removal of the footboards. From 2016 class 365s were able to go to and from Ilford under their own power.

Nothing much. The Sectional Appendix still lists them as having no clearance on the GE.

My guess would be that the change was due to Hornsey's last Cl317s being transferred to Ilford, meaning that there was no longer any suitable traction for drags. Given the lack of clearance I can only assume that such moves were made with special permission.

I’m fairly sure that once they had been refurbished, the C4 exams were done in house at Hornsey. Can’t recall any goi to Ilford in their later years

The 2008/09 round of C4s were all done at Ilford. That's when some units went via Cambridge because Canonbury was blocked. I don't know about any following rounds.

All visited Ilford in 2013-16 for PRM mods. But roughly half the fleet needed a second visit, having not got the DDA toilet first time round. As an aside, do any of our recorders of detailed interior changes have full information on this?

Class 317s were still at Hornsey until April 2017. Special clearance may have been obtained in anticipation of their departure from Hornsey, the class 317s did hang on a bit longer than planned.
