Derby to Leeds return.

I will shortly be travelling from Derby to Leeds, outward on Saturday, return on Sunday. It's been suggested to me that it would be cheaper to buy a ticket from Derby to Huddersfield, rather than Leeds.

Is this advice correct or would you be expected to take the branch train from Sheffield with such a ticket?

Derby to Huddersfield is valid via Leeds, tickets between Derby and Huddersfield are routed via Sheffield.

Trainsplit will offer journeys that give 1 change in Leeds.

That's perfectly valid, and journey planners will offer itineraries via Leeds accordingly. Connections at Leeds are fairly good, and the train from Sheffield to Huddersfield takes quite a long time (1¼ hours to cover 23 miles as the crow flies) - meaning via Leeds is actually the fastest route most of the time.
