If the DVT doesn't have traction motors and uses power from the 91 how is it moving? The 91 pushes but that means it is reversing?
It's a convenient way to make 'loco and coaches' behave like a 'multiple unit' and remove the need for shunting each time the train reverses.Yes, the 91 will simply push or pull, depending on the direction of travel.
Like all modern traction, a class 91 can move as easily in one direction as the other (it even has a cab at each end, although the blunt end cab is rarely used) So yes it's pushing but it's misleading to say its reversing. Shouldn't it be the other way around? The loco being the wife controlling the DVT husband....Easiest way I used to explain it is the Loco is the husband & the DVT is the wife. If they disagree they divorce (deconfigure) and then you continue as single (conventional).

More importantly, the portion working of the sleeper would make reforming the DVT a right pain.There's not much of a need to put a DVT on the sleeper, they don't need to turn around half a dozen times a day.

Night riviera would make more sense as it would remove the need for the second loco to attach/detach at Reading and get rid of the propelling move on/off Long Rock at Penzance.There is talk of using one on the Night Riviera as that doesn't portion-work - was mentioned as a possibility (but not certainty) in the article in Modern Railways about the proposed new locomotive order.

The LNWR used mechanical linkages with rods but the LMS adopted the vacuum system from 1927 and converted existing equipment.as an aside how many autotrain control systems were there? the GWR used physical rods but I thought one of the others used some sort of pressure based system
