82xxx DVT how do they move?

If the DVT doesn't have traction motors and uses power from the 91 how is it moving? The 91 pushes but that means it is reversing?

Yes, the 91 will simply push or pull, depending on the direction of travel.

It’s a carriage which has been designed to have a driving desk with through wiring to the locomotive. All motive power is provided by the locomotive regardless of direction of travel.

Like all modern traction, a class 91 can move as easily in one direction as the other (it even has a cab at each end, although the blunt end cab is rarely used) So yes it's pushing but it's misleading to say its reversing. The driver in the DVT is controlling the Class 91 remotely, just like any EMU with a driving trailer leading.

Modern traction? Steam engines could (and did/still do) run in either direction!

Time Division Multiplex. It’s how the DVT/DBSO & Loco communicate.

Easiest way I used to explain it is the Loco is the husband & the DVT is the wife. If they disagree they divorce (deconfigure) and then you continue as single (conventional).

Consider a DVT to be just a box with a windscreen and a (duplicate) set of controls to tell the loco at the other other end to push the train backwards.

Whilst I fully appreciate the reasoning behind them on the efficiency they brought it did water down the ride quality and increase lurching as pushing with that sort of acceleration and at higher speeds isn't the smoothest option. It's a good job nobody tried to get the sleepers operated with such a system in the end for exactly that reason although I'm sure it'll have come up in meetings and on suggestion lists over the years.

There's not much of a need to put a DVT on the sleeper, they don't need to turn around half a dozen times a day.

Except the Chiltern Mk3s and ATW Mk4s, which have been modified to use the American AAR system which the Class 67s (and 59s, 66s and some 68s) are fitted with.

More importantly, the portion working of the sleeper would make reforming the DVT a right pain.

There is talk of using one on the Night Riviera as that doesn't portion-work - was mentioned as a possibility (but not certainty) in the article in Modern Railways about the proposed new locomotive order.

It'd not be helpful for Caledonian Sleeper.

Night riviera would make more sense as it would remove the need for the second loco to attach/detach at Reading and get rid of the propelling move on/off Long Rock at Penzance.

Is there enough station length for an added DVT or would it be in lieu of a carriage.

Other than being run on a shoestring I'm slightly surprised it wasn't looked at before when the mk3 DVTs went surplus - wouldn't be the first time old TDM equipment was reused/refitted, & doesn't it use the PA circuitry?

The LNWR used mechanical linkages with rods but the LMS adopted the vacuum system from 1927 and converted existing equipment.

The French used compressed Air such as on the seven-coach double deck steam push-pull sets used on suburban workings out of St Lazare.


doesn't it use the PA circuitry?
RCH jumpers, which are used for controlling the lighting etc.

Though in early WCML days there were issues with signal degradation, so the Mark 2F and 3 stock used on the WCML was fitted with screened cables for the push-pull working.

I think that one of the Southern’s constituents used wires running along the roof. Even though the driver was at the other end of the train, there was still the fireman on the footplate.
