Are there any rumours/conversations going around about the 175s when they go off lease from TFW? Because of the new trains coming in soon.

Stacks of “what if” speculation in a thread last year:
I don’t think there’s anything much newer…

If the 175s go to Northern, what would they replace?

They could either directly replace 156s (as they basically are an uprated 156) or they could kick off a cascade which would result in the scrapping of 155s, 156s or 150s.

Probably a bit of both, though due to the end doors ideally nothing involving Castlefield.

Nothing has been confirmed, but I can't see any sense in them going anywhere other than Northern, so to me it's that or razor blades.
Say if Northern has then hypertheticily what would they replace and what routes would they be on?

It might be worth reading the previous thread as it has all been discussed there. Heaton as a dedicated fleet for the North East is one option people have considered.

My suggestion would be long distance services that go through or terminate at Victoria rather than Castlefield (e.g. Vic-Chester or the Calder Valley), allowing 195s to be put onto the local services where their superb acceleration provides most benefit and some 150s to go in the bin. They have also been used before, and could be used again, on stuff like the Mid Cheshire Line.

Seems like a good option yes.

The maintenance base for 175s at Chester is likely to be dedicated to maintaining their replacement (CAF 197s), and will be a CAF-operated site.
The similar class 180s are in service with GC and EMR until they are replaced, I'm not sure who maintains them.
There might be a case for using the 175s on EMR regional services (eg on the Crewe-Derby route), replacing the same 15x mix as at Northern.
But it would all need DfT approval, and depends on leasing rates for a 20+ year old fleet.
In their favour, they have been recently refurbished at Alstom Widnes.
Meanwhile, Northern has asked for bids for new DMUs.
