Possibly a continuation from the action at Christmas but the RMT has called a strike for this Saturday and on Saturday 5th March.

Disruption expected.

We are expecting widespread disruption to our services due to planned strike action by the RMT (The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers).

Disruption is to be expected on Saturday 19 February and Saturday 5 March as we will only be able to run a very limited timetable, with the cancellation of many of our services.

We are advising customers to alter their plans where possible and to avoid travel on either Saturday 19 February or Saturday 5 March.

We recommend you check your journey before you travel by visiting our timetable updates page.

Finally officially confirmation. I messaged Cross Country last week asking why their trains from Bristol to Exeter hadn't been released for sale (no Advance tickets or seat reservations available on any train all day on Saturday) and they said it was because of the industrial action, which I wasn't aware of and at the time I couldn't see anything on their website.

Maybe, or it might just be unions at the 2 TOCs you mention exercising leverage in the traditional manor to try & regain or preserve perceived parity with certain other operators.

The industry doesn't have much money. Changes to working practices and terms of conditions to adapt to restructuring of the rail post-Covid and pay restraint are very likely at a time of high inflation. The unions won't like most of this and the combination of all of this doesn't make for excellent relations. And even if some operators were sympthetic to some of the demands, in many ways their hands are tied by DfT/Treasury paymasters. Some things are in the industry's control, others are not.

Given the storm action tomorrow, and industrial action on Saturday, XC excelled themselves tonight. A packed to the rafters five coach final southbound departure from Manchester to Bournemouth, connecting to a four car service at New Street from Edinburgh down to Plymouth. Slow claps all round...

What you say may be true, but that’s not what this dispute is actually about.

The point is TOC A can agree wholeheartedly with the union Bs request but when the proposal goes up to the DfT for approval as does everything these days they say NO.

Union B not fully understanding what they’ve been wishing for the last 25 years (renationalisation) then blame the TOC and their “fat cat” “profit creaming” management.

All strikes cancelled. Dispute withdrawn.
Incredible how that always seems to happen so close to the day of the strike that it's impossible to restore the normal timetable. Very unfortunate timing with the strike being scheduled for the day after Storm Eunice, too.

You may want to ask the RMT why they’ve told staff the ‘dispute has been withdrawn’ then?

In the RMT's own words:
Planned action by Train Manager and Senior Conductor members on Cross Country on Saturday in a long running battle to defend jobs and safety has been suspended by the union this morning after a legal challenge by the company utilising the full force of the anti union laws.

Of course, what the really means is "RMT declared an illegal strike and got caught".

I would love to know what "anti union laws" are.
When they say it they're usually referring to Section 3 of the Trade Union Act 2016 which is titled: Ballots: 40% support requirement in important public services.

It's not clear if that's specifically what affects this case however.

Standard TOC tactic, find some discrepancy with ballot - people retired/left/ job role changed not on unions records.

Strikes need to be announced 14 days in advance, don't they? Was fine for the March date but not for the February one at the time.

It may have been 7 days in the past, the number of hoops that need to be jumped and boxes ticked these days before any industrial action can be taken and companies still would rather spend the money on legal disputes and challenges and paying management barmy sums of money to work the trains rather than solving the issues for the greater good of the company and its staff, makes no sense to me...

That is true but it cuts both ways. The trade unions collect subs from their members so theoretically have the same quality of data available to them.

[Speaking as someone with 44 years service in July, and a union member for all but the firsts two months of that]

It cant be the lack of 14 days notice being the reason the strikes have been stopped. The one for 5 March has also been called off so there must be another reason.

While they do collect subs (most by direct debit) if a member changes job role or depot and doesn't inform the union then ballot paper will be sent in error quite easily.

I’ve still not worked out what the actual issues are here.

I’m sure this was asked up thread and I don’t think anyone was able to comment. Which begs the question why aren’t the RMT shouting loudly about what the issue is?
