Sorry for this basic question.

I intend to make my periodic journey from Honiton to Warrington Bank Quay (via Exeter and Birmingham New Street)

I will be travelling with an elderly disabled person.

Normally we catch the 10.16 train from Honiton, but note that the earliest Off Peak we can now catch is 11.16 - am I correct in this?

I have to be fairly sure of the journey considering my travelling companion.

Kind Regards,

Are you travelling from Honiton to Warrington Bank Quay using an Off Peak Return (not via London) priced at £154.20 before any railcard discount.

Usually these are valid on any train departing Honiton at or after 0930 (Mon-Fri).

What's the issue with the 1017 from Honiton to Exeter. Has it been cancelled on the day you were looking to travel on?

Or is the issue that you maybe need "compulsory" reservations on all or part of the journey that you're intending to make, and the booking system is defaulting you to the next following (still available to be booked) train(s)?

The ticket is only valid after 0930, and there is currently (covid I guess) only a 0916 and an 1116

I don't see any reason you couldn't buy the return to Warrington anyway, but then buy a single to Cranbrook and take the 0916 train from Honiton to Cranbrook, and then switch to your return for the 0931 departure from Cranbrook

Thanks - yes £154.20 before my senior railcard discount.

There doesn't seem to be a 10.17 train

Thank You - yes this will work - it is just a bit more effort to get the disabled person on and off at Cranbrook but we can do it.Regards,

Don't think you'd need to actually need to alight/reboard at Cranbrook (Devon) if travelling on the earlier 0916 departure from Honiton, if travelling with an appropriate/valid ticket combination.

I think the problem is about the lack of a connection at Exeter St David’s from the 10:17 from Honiton. Nothing stops the OP using that 10:17 but there is nothing to gain by doing so.

Haywain,
Thank you - didn't think of that - at least we could wait at Exeter? - and reduce the amount of times I have to get the wheelchair on and off the train.
Also 10.17 is a better time of day for us as we can get a lift to the station at this time.
I will work out the train from Exeter for the onward journey

Correct, the 0916 from Honinton gets into Cranbrook. It leaves at 0931, when your offpeak ticket is open, no need to do anything.

If you want to completely eliminate any fear of a problem, you could buy a single through to Exeter (where you'd have to get off anyway), and switch to your long distance ticket at that point. There's no Break-of-journey restriction, so you can start the ticket whenever you want, as long as it's after 0930, at Honiton, Cranbrook, Exeter, or even get at taxi to Tiverton and join there.

There's no change from normal on the way back, you can use your ticket on the 0941 from Warrington arriving Honiton 1554 (or indeed later trains)

The temporary timetable (as this week) has the train at 0932 - next week has the service back to hourly.
Unfortunately there is no 1127 ex St Davids.

Thank You.

If I catch the 10.17 from Honiton ,the earliest train I can catch then to Birmingham from Exeter Saint Davids is the 12.27? - pity about the loss of the 11.27!

arriving at Birmingham New Street at 14.56 - and catch the 15.15 to Warrington Bank Quay?

Would this work?

Kind Regards,

That is certainly the case at the moment, although you haven't said when you intend to make the journey. If it was one person with good mobility and reflexes there would be an outside chance of connecting in to the 10:44 from Exeter but your circumstances are not appropriate for the to be considered.

Thank You. Sorry the journey is planned for Tuesday the 22nd of February.

If the 10.44 is delayed then me may have a chance - otherwise a long wait at Exeter.

I see an XC service from Paignton to Bristol leaving Exeter at 10:54 - this connects with the 12:35 XC from Bristol to Birmingham which in turn connects with the 14:15 VT service direct to WBQ. Perhaps this would be a better option then waiting for the 12:27, although I appreciate it involves an extra change which is not ideal.

Edit: This doesn't appear to be running at the moment, I checked a day in March. My apologies.

If it were me, I'd pay a few quid extra for the singles to Cranbrook to allow travel on the 09:16 from Honiton with it's better connections.

I'm not seeing that, you might want to check again.

I personally would have a word with the guard either before or upon boarding the 9.16 due to the amanded timetable in place.

The sentiment might be good but I think that's not an entirely practical option for the OP's specific circumstances when an extra £7 or so provides certainty.

Thank you all for your help with this - we arrived on time in Warrington after a smooth journey.

Tomorrow I am travelling back alone - my planned journey is :-

Warrington Bank Quay to Birmingham 10.40
Birmingham to Exeter 12.12
Exeter to Honiton 15.25

I presume this will work?

The rail timetable suggests changing at Wolverhampton but I don‘t think that is necessary?

Kind Regards,

Some people I know are seriously intimidated by Birmingham New Street, and Wolverhampton offers a preferable interchange for them, but I would change at New Street myself. If you don't know the station, its baffling layout with barriers between platforms can be circumvented if you use the footbridge at the back end of the platform on arrival, the "C" end of the station. I presume your interchange time at New Street is at least 12 minutes to be a valid connection.

EDIT I see (you didn't say in your post) that you only have 7 minutes between trains at Birmingham New Street. All the more reason to use the simple footbridge, but if you don't make the connection then you won't be able to claim compensation because it's for less time than the minimum required. I think you have an off-peak return for this part of the journey. Note the "12" in reverse white-on-black for Birmingham New Street in the attached timetable extract which indicates the minimum connection time which rail planners will use and which is required to qualify for compensation for missed connections.
Your trains at Birmingham are currently showing as arriving into platform 2 (12:05) and the next train leaving from platform 11 (12:12) but this can change of course.

One thing's for sure, if you change at Wolverhampton you've no chance of making the 12:12 Birmingham-Exeter service! (Bad advice, sorry)

Thank you.

Yes Birmingham New Street is certainly baffling - I never seem to be able to go directly to my next train and can never remember which end the back of the station is! Presumably it is in the direction the train enters the station travelling from the north.

Is there an easy way of identifying which is the departure platform from Birmingham?

This is incorrect. The Avanti service waits at Wolverhampton for a long time, during which time a CrossCountry service arrives and departs. Changing to the CrossCountry service gets you to Birmingham quicker, meaning there's more chance of making the connection to the Exeter service, and also making you eligible for delay-repay.

Sorry for the misleading advice, if you change at Wolverhampton (where you are booked to arrive at 11:34) you can get to New Street earlier and then change there as well, apologies, I'd forgotten about the first train's long wait at Wolverhampton.
The earlier arrival is the Manchester-Reading service which leaves Wolverhampton at 11:42 and is booked to arrive into platform 1A at Birmingham New Street at 11:59. Unfortunately the easier stairs are at the opposite end of the platform at New Street, but at least you should have more time to get to them.

The easy-to-navigate side of the station is at the Wolverhampton/Warrington end of the platforms, where the platforms are given a "B" suffix (e.g. platform 10B). When you take the stairs or escalators up from this end of the platform, you'll find yourself in a wide-straight corridor with access to all the platforms and no barriers to go through. There are lots a screens in the corridor.

I already posted that your departure platform at New Street should be 11, but you need to check either online or at the station. Online example: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/simple/gb-nr:BHM.

And hope that the 09:40 runs better than today when it was 22 minutes late into Birmingham. It has also been 3-4 minutes late on other days in the past week. 7 minutes from Platform 2 to 11 at Birmingham New St. is very optimistic if you are with a disabled person.

Thank you for the advice - it looks as though it is better to change at Wolverhampton.

Thanks for the platform number - never seem to be able to find it online!

On my last journey I claimed delay and repay thanks to the help of this forum ( repayment was donated to charity.)

Disappointing start to the day! - the taxi didn’t turn up! - so missed the 10.40 from Warrington.

Now at the station ,but think I will have to catch the 11.40 - eventually into Honiton at about six o‘clock.

Two hours later than I had planned.
