What service(s) take the extra set on a Friday?

It operates the 1036 Preston - Euston extra and then replaces the 221 operated 1430 Euston - Lancaster, which is extended to Glasgow.
The 221 operates an extra 1333 Euston - Lancaster service, providing some relief to the 1330 Euston Glasgow.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
The 1846 to Preston or the 1857(?) to Manchester.

The 1846 Euston - Preston is operated by a 221.

The 1857 Euston - Manchester is operated by the 390 released by the use of the Pretendolino on the 1843 Euston - Birmingham - Crewe.

I wouldn't assume 390s are spare, they would be being serviced etc, that's why 57/3 'Thunderbirds' are rife for rescuing.

If there are spare 390's why do they use an MK3 set

Because they're not spare sets, some will be undergoing routine maintenance others were until recently undergoing major overhauls that took them out of service for several days at a time whilst any left over will be hot spares waiting to take over in case another set fails somewhere else.

The hot spares are allox each day, and certainly the Euston hot spare works the 1733 to Liverpool before being relieved 20 mins later by an EBW arrival, and as such are figured in the 47 sets. The working diagrams for each day show these.

The 5 390s that are not rostered each day are on full day maintenance or long period overhauls. The maintenance period through the night allows the first trains into shed out first, and the last ones to pick up workings mid morning - peak when they're running out of trains. There is also 2 diagrams that have peak morning workings then nothing until the evening and as such can be worked on during the day at Willesden and are extra spares.

There is 1 hot spare at Euston in a relief road usually, although it can shifted back to Willesden; 1 hot spare at Longsight. There is no hot spare at New St, however there is mid-afternoon turn which runs as necessary taking one of the London spares on maintenance to New St if the Oxley set under maintenance has had to step in.

47 diagrams including the hot spares, 2 allowed under heavy overhaul periods, 2 at Longsight and 1 somewhere else (Oxley or Polmadie) or all 3 at Longsight (Fri/Sat).

I reckon the diagrams do change depending on maybe maintenance as mentioned above because the 0741 ex BHI to EUS can return as the 0903 or 0923 towards Birmingham or more often than not it becomes the 0930 to GLC (based on what the door screens say on arrival at EUS)
