On Monday, I need to travel from Milton Keynes Central to visit several destinations in South London (using the Southern service to East Croydon). Obviously, the best thing to do is to buy a ticket with a travelcard attached...but, I cannot work out the pricing for these. Can you buy them online?

If you enter MKC to ECR on any booking site, it should offer you a Travelcard. Indeed entering the name or code of any Zone 1-6 station should offer you a Travelcard.

The price is £26.00 "off peak".

The destination on Avantix is LONDON ZONES 1-6.

You can reduce the price to £19.50 if you are prepared to take London Midland only to Harrow & Wealdstone, and change there for Southern.

Off-peak day travelcard (not valid on trains arriving at Euston or Kensington Olympia before 10.00, or valid on trains leaving Euston/Kensington Olympia between 16.45 and 18.45) is:
- £19.50 if you are willing to tie yourself to either Virgin Trains OR London Midland from Milton Keynes to Euston (or the boundary of zone 6 if you use London Midland)
- £26.00 valid on any company

An Anytime day travelcard (valid any time) is:
- £31.80 for Virgin Trains only
- £39.80 valid on any company

If you want to use the direct Southern service from Milton Keynes to East Croydon then you'll need one valid on any company, unless you are happy to buy the LM only one, which means you'll have to travel with London Midland to Harrow/Wealdstone, where you can change for Southern to East Croydon.

You can buy them online, but there is no price advantage to doing so; you are better off buying them at the station on the day as if for whatever reason you cannot travel, you won't be able to reclaim the full cost of your ticket.

If you are traveling on Monday 3rd January, that is a bank holiday so no time restrictions will apply on that day for the use of off-peak tickets.

Likewise if you hold a Network Railcard (£25 per year) you can use this at anytime on Monday 3rd with no minimum fare. This would give you 34% off the price of your travelcard.
Normally on weekdays you cannot use the network card before 10am (& a £13 minimum fare payable after that)

And as an added bonus, non-advance tickets you buy online from Southern can be cancelled if you don't collect them.

You can refund them anyway (subject to £10 admin fee) so the Southern "offer" is rather misleading as it insinuates that you can't and only mentions it in the T&C's.

Well, yes, but Southern will waive the £10 fee as I understand it.

And in any case do you not have to go onto their website, fill in a form, print it out and post it to them (at your own expense)?
