GWR Weekend Brighton services

Despite no apparent weekend engineering works these trains are often pulled. They are usually very busy services especially the extra Sunday ones.

Currently in the long term plan Saturday sees only the morning train run whilst Sunday sees just one train rather than four which sits at Brighton around three hours before taking the pathway of what would have been the next GWR service. However the short term plan cuts even these two services.

Fratton has had a huge influx of drivers recently so hopefully these services will resume. I'm sure at weekends they are very valuable.

The line is closed between Salisbury and Southampton all weekend, buses between these 2 points, remember bashing the 33s in 1980s, these services diverted via Basingstoke, with a run round involved there. It seems a culture now to just pup on RRB rather than arrange diversions, crew route knowledge I guess a big factor now

Yes, from experience it tends to be a very unreliable experience. Between the 2 times I have tried to catch in from Salisbury to Brighton it has been cancelled or terminated early at Southampton for no apparent reason.

Part of the temporary timetable reductions sees the Saturday service start from Fratton at 0954 and Sunday return cancelled. The GWR website has a PDF will all the altered services.

It's a shame for it not to be running, considering it is a lot faster than the Southern services. Especially on Sundays when the Southampton - Brighton calls at every station between Brighton & Chichester (and suffers from overcrowding along the way)

Better that a service is cancelled on a route where there are alternatives, than leave a large gap where there aren’t. Ok - better if not cancelled at all….

There is however major engineering works on the BML with VIC-Brighton trains diverted via Littlehampton meaning there are only 2 full length Platforms available at Brighton

It's nonsensical as ever. They had the crew for it. Hoping the Sunday four make a return one day. The morning Brighton to Cardiff was a packed train as was the late evening one that arrived in Brighton around 9pm

Eh I respectfully disagree there. On Sunday there are only 4tph from Southern than run into Brighton from the West Coastway. The GWR can sit in Platform 1 or Platform 3, the London via Littlehampton services can use 2 and the Brighton to Portsmouth/Southampton services use 1.

If its for Saturday or SX, a 2 and a half hour lay over can still be accommidated, just through platform sharing, either the GWR is put in 3 and the Southern Brighton - West Worthing and Portsmouth/Littlehampton services platform share or a combination of the above solution.

GWR are running them to Brighton on weekdays next week despite engineering work on the BML on those days

Southern do the platform workings at Brighton on behalf of NR. There’s a few locations where the main/sole TOC takes the lead.

I know, but Southern don't take into account GWR. So Network Rail have to get the platforms to work with GWR.
