A couple of my friends is planning to go to Aylesbury this weekend.
However, they have got a London - High Wycombe off-peak return ticket.

If they managed to get a fare excess from the ticket office to Aylesbury, would it be possible to go via Amersham instead of via High Wycombe for the faster journey?

Yes, an excess converts your ticket to a new fare, and therefore gives all the rights normally associated with that new fare. Which in this case includes the right to travel via Amersham.

The only difference is in terms of refund rights, if you excess an Advance into a flexible ticket. The "Advance" part remains nonrefundable.

Not quite that simple - if excessing an Advance fare the route restrictons also remain in place with the new ticket.
