Northern Rail have about 20 vacancies up on there site.

Wage is either £12,680 for Cleaner (Nights) - Newton Heath (Manc, 10 Jobs), Buxton or Barrow.

Or £15,582 for Cleaner Team Leader (Nights) - Newton Heath (Manc), Barrow or Wigan.

Most will stick there nose up at these jobs, but for those out of work, or for those trying to make a first start on the railway these might be ideal.

Unlike other stinky companies, at least they employ their own staff with proper travel benefits; all are with full ATOC travel benefits and Northern Rail pass.

Closes 7th January. Apply:

Yep certainly best way to get into the railway, it was my route in and now I'm happy potting around as a dispatcher.

I started as a carriage cleaner. It certainly wasn't like any other cleaning I've done... though I wasn't in a depot. I did have a week at Ilford Depot and found that horrific - it's very hard work. Are these jobs depot jobs?

Looks like most of them are depot jobs, but Northern do have some staff on stations for cleaning (such as Darlington). Also see ISS people on their trains between workings.

I applied for one of them at Darlington a few months ago. shame i didnt get it because it would of been a great start on the railways for me. It could of been because of something on me CV or perhaps travel wise that i didnt get it.

I would imaging getting to Darlo from Chester-le-Street for the times they'd need you there by public transport would be very hard indeed, unless you could drive or get a lift there?

All these TPO jobs are nights, so last train in -first train home should be ok for most people. Jobs Barrow and Newton Heath will certainly be safety critical, with PTS track safety training being provided.

Problem with Darlo is that there are normally only 3-4 trains to be cleaned, the rest go to Heaton. So you'd be waiting around for a few hours to get a train back.

Not necessarily as the depots are not Network Rail infrastructure. The cleaners on our yard don't have PTS although naturally they wear proper PPE and have been fully briefed in the workings of the depot (although one or two have Sentinel cards). Cleaners can also use a walking route without PTS as long as you have been briefed on the route, hazards etc.

This is an excellent way on to the railway for those wanting progress into Traincrew grades or other grades at a later date as it will open up the internal vacancies list you, which you would be free to apply for jobs that you want to go for. Good luck to those who apply! :D

I've always been under the impression that any member of rail staff can use walking routes if they have cause to do so (no PTS required). (Get ready for a tangent...) I remember my first day at Southend Victoria - one of the Supervisors, now retired, took me and another newbie on a tour of the yard next to platform 1, down to the shunters hut, across the running line and back past the very run down signal box to the driver/RPI messrooms (The Block). It was most interesting. We didn't have a PTS card.

I think it should be a minimum standard where there's no platform level access as trains are still moving. Piccadilly eastern spur (siding behind top of plat 1) is accessible by jumping (allegedly) from the back of the platform but there is still an official requirement to have PTS.

After seeing in '98 one Northern Spirit driver on Blackpool sidings not knowing the depot limit linespeed & doing about 35-40mph, there is still risk.

(Driver later mentioned, "oh, as long as the not to be moved boards don't blow off, it's fine" ) :o(
