The DfT need to stay as far away from rolling stock procurement as is humanely possible.
Its predecessors weren’t particularly good at introducing new fleets on time either, 158s ,159s, 180s & Networkers were all late into full service going by original timescales.

Could be, although the last two attempts were cancelled.
Talking of that, I have noticed a couple of times recently there's a path in for a 701 to come up from Eastleigh to Wimbledon Park, just after old unit(s) (455/456/458) have left for storage at long Marston. One making room for the other perhaps?

This illustrious device has just arrived and 'terminated' at ESL. It arrived screened up for WEY, doors released/closed, driver changed ends, doors again, PIS changed to WAT and now waiting to go back up. Normal scheduled test run I presume?

Now cancelled (again).

On another note, 701016 is now on the move from Wimbledon pk to Feltham depot. (just after a trio of 456's also left, for Long Marston).

Yes it's today's 5Q51, due to leave again 1314. See below for timings on RTT.

Ah right, thanks!

I can't say the things interest me in the slightest, but there was a mild element of curiosity to see one actually function!

Seeing them all sat about lined up I'm reminded of the opening scenes of the Till Death Do Us Part film (made well before my time!), with Alf Garnett & co watching cinema newsreel footage of Nazi military hardware on parade, before Alf comments loudly "They're all bl**dy cardboard they are...."

Thanks 59CosG95. Great summary - really informative. Can't recall seeing one for the 701s previously - or if there was, think it was probably a while ago.

Thanks!

Was it 001-016 needing the big mods and 017 and most of the /5 needing smaller mods?

It would probably be safe to assume at least 5 units in Derby beyond an the highest number seen that are in some form of existence.

Still find myself wondering what was wrong with the Electrostar design.
Apparently the design was becoming less compliant with stringent regulations coming into force, meaning that the design either need to be updated or be replaced completely, hence Bombardier going for the latter and inventing the Aventra.

Exactly! Things progress, regulations change and need to be met. The past is not always a good place. Just like I'd much rather have a crash in a car designed in 2020 over one in 1990. The same can be said for trains.

As much as progress is needed, the way the Aventras turned out (SWR’s 701s being a prime example) does make them a huge downgrade from the Electrostar - that being said, when the Aventras work, the overall ride quality is a lot better IMO.

As a passenger, comparing like for like, the Overground 710s are much nicer than the 378s.

Aventras weight a lot less and are hugely more energy efficient
