I wish I knew a bit more about continental stuff!
It’s got some great roof detail for N gauge.

I've noticed in general their roof detail is good, the pans are very fine. Even older models are pretty good. I suppose where the vast majority of their stock is overhead the makers have got good at it, much like UK stuff tends to have very good underframe detail.

Nice model, I like the livery - makes a nice change from DB traffic red all the time that you usually see. £74 sounds good, especially when it has a DCC socket despite purporting to not have!

British sellers of foreign stock on eBay tend to sell at excellent prices, normally because the interest just isn't here. Although I've noticed recently the real dark horse is Kato from Japan. There is a BR 425 EMU which is UK RRP of £175 but new from Japan on ebay is £110 and depending on seller about £15/20 shipping.

Among the articles was one on prototypical short train formations in Europe, right through from France and Spain to Switzerland, Germany and Poland etc etc

Ever since I looked at the photos, I've been interested in the railways on the European Continent but I tend to find the more rural branches and secondary routes more interesting than the main lines. Though these days they really look and operate with sometimes stock little more than 10 years old often newer, a lot of the interesting stuff has gone...

And I prefer DB 103s to 120s anyway, but that's by-the-by! ;)

https://www.vagonweb.cz/ is my bible, put in seemingly any train number and you'll get normal formations going back years. Unfortunately the Talent and FLIRT families are now taking over the branches and the days of 111, 112, 143 and 218s seems to be coming to an end. RE and IC services however are still a bastion of loco hauled stock. Always space for a 103 on a railtour...

It's a pity the obverse isn't true :s

That would be useful

Sadly vagonweb announced it was ending the train formations part, the site owner said it was taking too much time he no longer had to maintain.

Not in Central Scotland! Not yet anyway ;)

@TheEdge - Is the continental N gauge slightly smaller than our version? The road vehicles are smaller from what I remember?

Aren't the scales rather like the UK 00 vs H0 scaling - UK "N" is 1:148, I believe outside the UK the scaling is 1:160. The difference is due to the original UK "N" gauge being termed as treble "O" or "000" and designed as 2mm to the foot or 1:152.

I also believe I read that Japan uses a different system as well, so Lord knows what its "N" scale is!

One thing this post shows is that I read/have read far too many modelling magazines to know all that!

That sounds correct to me (I suppose I could have looked it up actually ;)), it’s always quite tempting to order the odd road vehicle but my friend ordered a Unimog and it looks in danger of being squashed by a 1:48 Transit van!

What's wrong with that? I thought Transit Vans were designed to squash other road users? ;)

I'll get me coat... <D8-)

Well that is true.
Back to a more serious point - apparently the Japanese dual scale with N, they use the standard (excl. UK) 1:160 for standard gauge but use 1:150 for modelling traditional Japanese 3ft 6in railways and 4ft 6in tramway/subways.

So Japanese N gauge vehicles might work in theory at the smaller 1:150 scale for modelling GB, the difference is small enough to not be noticeable compared to our 1:148 I think.

I mean you do see a fair number of Japanese cars/people carriers on the roads, a neighbour has FOUR of the huge gas guzzlers, though I don't think they were common in 1980s rural Devon were they?

*I now await you to tell me you know someone in Crediton with SIX or something* ;)

Oh no, hope they leave the existing stuff up. Because I'm aiming for late 00s to mid 10s its not disastrous if it stops getting updated. Still sad.

Join the dark side!

@Cowley I've used British buildings alongside continental models and I don't see it as a huge issue as the scale is less of a problem in those sizes. I've never looked at stock but there isn't really much crossover. That being said the various Ferry wagons may be viable but with British N being bigger I'll possibly loose the noticeable size difference there should be between continental and UK loading gauge vehicles.

The archive is being retained, it's simply that new current formations will not be added.

Guess who was left unattended in Scograil for 15 minutes...

DSC_0833_2.JPG
A surprisingly well detailed (and 100% metal) pocket wagon to go with my various freight wagons.

But then, hidden in the bottom of a cabinet, seemingly having been a storeroom find...
DSC_0834_2.JPG

3 heavy duty Samms 12 wheel flats complete with Leopard 2 tank loads. I've been trying to get the stock for the DB Militarzugs. Hobbytrain are producing a Laadks flat suitable for lighter vehicles and Fleischmann are producing a Bm235 for the guard coach (it'll need repainting and maybe some light modifications) but the various versions of the heavy Samms flats are either out production or upcoming ones have (it looks like) loads molded to them. So to find 3 out of production at £20 each they were an instant buy. Although the Leopards do need replacing as they are awful looking cheap plastic affairs but that's not too hard at all, and lets me pick exactly what vehicles I want.

Really nice, especially the pocket wagon.
Could those tanks be improved with a bit of skilful weathering to pick out the detail? I don’t mean to make them look dirty, just to get rid of the the plasticy green behind the tracks etc.

Well, my other big interest in life after trains is military vehicles. So those need a total repaint to start as the Bundeswehr don't use all over olive drab, and really they are slightly out of period as they should be second generation Leopard 2A5 (or later variants) by the mid 00s rather than the first generation style. So I'll probably replace them with some custom models, maybe PzH2000s.

Interesting. I think I might have seen mention that before somewhere now you say it.

I’ve invested in a 2nd hand pub off Ebay which I managed to get a decent price on. It’s quite small so a good size for Fort George and the colour reminded me of the buildings at Plockton so hopefully it will look right on the layout :)

That’s a nice little pub. I think you should put a light in it for late night drinking purposes. ;)

Very nice, I don't know if you're aware but that building is not actually too dissimilar to the pub in Plockton - the rather unimaginatively named Plockton Arms:

Yes, that's an excellent idea!

Ah, fantastic information. I didn't know that as I've only seen Plockton from a distance on a train (a place I need to spend some time I think), but I'm glad that the pub is suitably Scottish anyway :) What it lacks in originality of name, it looks like it would make up in character :)

Happened to be in York today and saw this in the Monk Bar Model shop window.
Apparently it had been put in the window display a few minutes before I saw it.
It ran beautifully in the shop so off to test it on the big railway.....

Anyone else manage to get to the exhibition/fair at Doncaster Racecourse today or tomorrow?

Must say the turnout was pretty substantial, and top marks to the organisers who in connection with First managed to put a shuttle bus on between the station and venue.

As it's my 40th tomorrow, I decided to treat myself to this lightly-weathered Bachmann 37 in Regional Railways colours. Apparently was "old new stock" from a retailer that closed. Apologies for the poor photo.

One particularly interesting locomotive on one of the layouts was this- sadly was not available for purchase!:

My most recent acquisition is a Hornby model of 90024 in Malcolm livery. I love the livery but I wish it had lights!
I just looked that up. It’s from the Railroad range isn’t it? It looks good.

A small, but very important new acquisition for the shed crew.

That’s a lovely thing I must say. Perfect for shunting a few wagons around a yard.

Very nice 37. They just looked great in that livery and it’s really nice that 37425 is wearing those colours out on the main line at the moment.
That model of 69 having the final touches done is superb. I just love it when someone does something a bit different like that.

Happy 40th for tomorrow too!

Thanks!

Been after a RR or large-logo 37/4 for a while, unfortunately almost all the large logo examples available seem to have a dog drawn on the side, being from the Scottish rather than Welsh allocation!

I did used to like the Welsh 37/4s. I think I only ever managed a run behind one of them but I had quite a few of the Scottish ones in the end.
