Travelling on Monday from Manchester Piccadilly to Blackpool North and there were no less than seven ticket checks...

- One at the main concourse entrance to the travelators at Piccadilly
- One on the footbridge at Piccadilly
- One on the train by the guard
- One on the train by Revenue Protection who got on at Oxford Road
- One on the train by a separate group of Revenue Protection who got on at Preston
- One at the doors at Blackpool North
- One by the ATB at Blackpool North

Is this not a bit overkill. Passengers were getting annoyed with it being so frequent.

Wouldn't say it's overkill. The one on the footbridge at Piccadilly is to check people who use the rear overbridge to change trains at Piccadilly.

It's a bit keen, although Blackpool North looks to be getting a bit lax.

Yes, no mention of being shot at, wonder what’s going off there?

It’s a shame some of these revenue staff they’ve employed / contracted can’t drive or conduct a train isn’t it.

Well ATB is Attenborough station, but seeing as that is no where near Blackpool North I’d go with something like - Automated Ticket Barrier

I know that the answer will be obvious. But 'ATB'?

You’re right to question it. It’s probably the official name and description for it and i sort of worked it out but despite this i don’t recall hearing it called this.

Sounds fine to me, perhaps a targetted operation to identify those for example who buy a ticket from origin > first possible stop rather than origin > their actual stop

I've spent a lot of years involved in gatelines and can't say that ATB is obvious to me. ATG perhaps...

ATB is usually used to refer to the old pink and blue large-format tickets, I think "Airline Ticket Blank" was what it stood for?

Edit: actually "Automated Ticket and Boarding pass".

That's what I immediately think of when ATB is mentioned, although I had never considered what it stood for.

At Blackpool North, if you have a manual ticket inspection on arrival they usually let you out via the side gate and not have you use the ticket gates. Two checks immediately one after the other is poor form. That's never happened to me there personally.

Also, the guard wouldn't usually be checking tickets in the same part of the train where there's a ticket examiner or other revenue working. Perhaps a mistake.

Whilst not clear, this suggests a ticket inspection between Piccadilly and Oxford Road which is quite impressive.

Possibly revenue protection got on the front at oxford road and worked backwards, while the guard - not realising this had happened - started checking from the back working forwards after oxford road?

Sorry - the guard was doing a ticket check between Oxford Road and Bolton, but the RPIs got on at Oxford Road. They got on at the front and the guard came from behind me.

Some operators are remarkably keen on checking tickets in First class (yes, EMR, looking at you).
The hosts are instructed to check tickets before dishing out complimentaries on EMR so if there's a host providing a service you'll be checked, and even if there isn't the TMs will often do first anyway.

Nothing unusual really, I got gripped twice each way by LNER on an Anglo Scottish journey over the weekend, once by revenue protection and once by the train manager heading north, and twice by two different train managers heading south.

Was it a pair of 331s or just a single 331?

Having a RPI in the front unit makes sense to capture those who board it knowing the guard is 'stuck' in the rear unit so there being a lesser chance of a ticket check. Especially if travelling to/from an unbarriered station with a ticket on the phone from the last station the train called at [i.e. Layton/Poulton for Blackpool North]

That's fair enough, but being checked before you've had a chance to sit down, with coffee in one hand and newspaper in the other, and before the train doors have closed really is a bit too keen for my liking

Depends if they pass the attitude test really. Most certainly do in EMR first.

Good afternoon, can I just check your ticket when you’re settled please, can I get you a drink ? Is very different to “this is first class have you got a ticket to be here?”

Perhaps it’s keen, perhaps it’s as a result of plenty of people trying it on.

I quite like the EMR method of a cursory check by the host to see you're in first class legitimately. Stops freeloaders quickly and usually means the host speaks to you very soon after boarding which means they know you're there and want service.

Do you really think Northern is capable of organising a targeted operation involving seven interactions?
