Sorry for my first post here to be one begging for information, but in mid April I was planning an interrail trip to Rome, going via Milan.

I was trying to book seat reservations but all the trains currently available take 9 or 10 hours rather than the 3 I was expecting. Is this because of any works on the line, or is it just because they’ve not released the high speed tickets for booking yet? I am hoping it’s the latter.

Sorry I should have said this is for the Milan to Rome bit of the trip

Welcome to the forum!
Looks like the Trenitalia Le Frecce (fast) times on the HSL don't go beyond the end of March at the moment.
All their trains shown for April are the slow ones via classic lines, or overnight sleepers.

You can book tickets on Italo fast services up to April 6.

I'd expect bookings for mid-April will be open in a couple of weeks from now.
Note that even in normal times, some through trains avoid reversing in the main termini by stopping in the suburbs (Milan, Florence, Rome).

Thanks for the reply, that’s what I was hoping

Hi and welcome!

If you are only doing Milan-Rome on that day, you could check out whether it is cheaper to buy a non-flexible ticket (either operator) rather than use a day of your Interrail. Seat61 has good advice which I am sure you have found.

Its due to Easter-quite a big affair over there in mid-april- and the estimates on how busy it will be, for-you guess, the covid pandemic. Many days-off in a row is also a favorite time for doing works on the rails. Plus that IT never had a history of being very swift with opening booking dates.
Also do read before about the much more stringent rules on entering and testing before-at least that is for now. Random border checks are still reported.
