Hi

There have been some rumours in the railway magazines and on wiki saying that they could return to FGW in late 2010. Does anyone know how much truth is in this?

Cheers,

Ryan

Well, unless they're getting them in the next week, I don't think they'll be going to FGW in late 2010. So no truth if you ask me ;)

Yeah I guess you don't mean late 2010 haha, but I too have read that rumour somewhere.

Back to First Great Western, to be maintained properly & to eventually be re-used on the Oxford & Cotswold Line / Hereford services - thats all i know of so far.

Is this because the Lincoln services that East Coast were supposedly going to run with the Eureka timetable have been cut to a return each day and a HST set being able to cover the diagram?

Er... yes. That was stated by ECML Co about 6 months ago:

http://www.eastcoast.co.uk/travel-information/Eureka/How-it-will-affect-you/

Seven weekday trains in each direction had been planned for the new Lincoln/London King’s Cross services, using an additional new fleet of trains (five Adelante Class 180s). East Coast will now not introduce this new fleet, and will instead use its existing trains to operate a modified service pattern which will include a single direct service from Lincoln.

Hi

First Great Western need to return the 7x142s to Northern before it would be possible for Northern to even consider giving up the 3x180s that they've subleased from East Coast.

IIRC FGW said the 180s were one possibly that they were looking at and there were rumours that the Paddington based staff wouldn't be happy with their return on their current terms.

There was also another rumour that Northern would take on the other 2x180s and it would mean FGW could keep the 7x142s permanently.

Maintained properly?? Think you must be thinking of a different operator!

The ironic thing is the 180s might be heading back to FGW who were keen to be rid of them due to poor reliability only to potentially see them back again, personally speaking I'm of the belief that 180s are perfectly good for Oxford indeed I rather see 180s being used on Oxford diagrams then HSTs until of course electrification to which 5 car EMUs such as the 444 would be perfect.

When and If FGW gets the 180s, they ought to be on the Hereford and Oxford workings and if any HSTs are made available by this move then they should be used on the Bristol, Exeter, Penzance routes, this being said I do also believe that the 180s should still be bolstered by 165s/166s.

The 165/166 trains freed by FGW having the 180's, could they not do the routes that the class 142's do that go back to Northern?

The 180's are apparently going to be focused on the Hereford/Worcester routes to free the 165/166's which are heading to Portsmouth-Cardiff routes to take over the 158 dedicated to that route which will eventually take over the routes where the borrowed 142's are which should then let them be released back to Northern for May 2011,

I'd rather have a 158 than a 165/166 anyday. I feel sorry for the people of FGW land...

oh wow really?

Can't quite picture a 165/6 on the Portsmouth line!

First it was 444s replacing 442s then 450s replacing 444s then 313s replacing 377s and now this!

I like the FGW Networkers, with a interior similar to FCC 365s I think they are perfectly acceptable for FGW to have.

surely 158s won't run between Exeter and Barnstaple though :P

that would be very strange :/

im guessing they'll more likely replace 150 long distance routes which will then go onto local lines

Would you want to be on one for 3h38?

What are you on about? The longest trip I've found is Paddington to Great Malvern via Euston and Birmingham New Street which is 3h 46m long if anything what FGW working are they going to be doing to take that long bar the Brighton to Great Malvern trip which they won't do as they're barred from Temple Meads.

So they're now cleared to use Bristol Temple Meads now are they as that is a calling stop on that route and the last I heard 165s/166s were barred/unable to use Temple Meads.

That being said, until it gets confirmed that the 165s/166s are cleared by Network Rail to use Temple Meads the 158s will stay on that route.

Have they been banned since the Thames Train service into Temple Meads stopped then? The few platform restrictions there were could no doubt easily be removed if it became worthwhile with a fair number of units moving West.

That's my point, from various comments here there seems to be a restriction on them using Temple Meads and until there's actually news of these restrictions being lifted, I'm of the opinion that the 158s will stay on their existing routes.

If anything, the 150s will work alongside the Pacers.

They as in the 165s will either stay exactly where they are now in the Thames Valley and the 166s to risk the wrath of Northerners will be cascaded to Northern to use on the Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds and Blackpool services, :)

They might not be brand new BUT they are newer then their existing trains and I look forward to be corrected to see if anyone would prefer to keep their 142s then have a newer train.....

I think the only problems at Bristol temple meads are the platforms under the main roof. since the portmouth Hbr trains don't normally use thos eplatforms then it should be ok for the class 165/166 at Bristol TM.

I wouldnt mind seeing class 166's used on the Cardiff - Portsmouth Hbr service as it will bring a bit of a change to the area, however speaking a a passengers who sometimes uses the service i much prefer the class 158's

Been done before!
Indeed, when I used to use the line regularly I caught a 158 once and then the two trains it crossed at Eggesford and Crediton were also 158's!
