Hi everyone,

Hopefully someone may be able to help (even if just letting me know there’s no chance of this happening.)

Greater Anglia have kindly decided to reduce the peak service due to Covid - from my station we’ve gone down from about 8 trains an hour into London to 2 and, funnily enough, these are absolutely packed with people crammed down the aisles. A number of people, including myself, have tried to complain to GA but no luck so far.

Meanwhile, GA have continued charging peak prices for the new service (which is the Sunday timetable). I would love to contact the ombudsman with this once GA inevitably offer a non-response to my complaint. Does anyone reckon we’ve got a chance of GA reducing peak prices given the lack of service, or are they well within their rights to charge full prices based on the time of day rather than the service offered?

Many thanks in advance.
Rich

So the trains are "packed" and you want to reduce prices. Mmm,

You could argue that prices should rise even further, to price demand off to meet the reduced service provision... Sorry got my cynical hat on today

It would be an interesting test case for the consumer rights act. I don't think any result could force a reduction in the ticket price going forward but it may allow people to claim a refund, probably only those who had purchased prior to notice of service reduction being made public. i.e the ticket was purchased on the basis of a certain level of service which GA no longer provide.

No chance. The fare is about getting from the origin to the destination, not about the level of service. Do fares double when a service is increased from hourly to half-hourly as a result of service improvements?

No, I want fares to be justified. Paying a Monday peak price for a Sunday service makes no sense to me.
Hopefully, they will review the service provision as a result of today's experience - that is essentially the best outcome.

While trains were full and standing was it actually worse than prior to March 2020?

Is this a regular journey? If so, why no season ticket?
Because I’m in the office 3 days a week, and currently with my railcard it’s cheaper to buy dailies.

Similar to pre-pandemic and I’d say probably worse (albeit only based on one day). Worth noting that Tuesdays-Thursdays tend to be the busiest days now so will be interesting to see what it’s like tomorrow.

The Consumer Rights Act has provisions for redress where the seller has provided information to the consumer which they take into account when deciding to make a purchase but is subsequently renege on.

It sounds like it only needs one extra train then and loadings will be about right.

Doesn't surprise me. Prior to the revised government guidance the most popular days to do the 3 days a week in our City office was Tues to Thurs
Now everybody is back wfh as our company followed the guidance.
