Nightjet Munich to Rome question.

I am trying to plan the family holiday in Italy this summer, Covid permitting.

I am intending to drive solo from our home in the Netherlands to Italy while my wife and kids would take the ICE from Utrecht to Munich, changing at Dusseldorf, and then the Nightjet to Rome.

Can anyone tell me if the Nightjet stops in Orvieto and could point me towards a timetable of calling points? I am pretty sure it would stop for two minutes in an important tourist town like that but just cannot find the list of stops. Orvieto would be perfect to pick the family up and have breakfast there before continuing to the campsite near Rome in the car.

No, NJ295 does not normally stop in Orvieto.

Another thought that came just to my mind, although not sure if it would fit your plans: they could also take the NJ from Munich to Venice, Verona or Milan. That one arrives at a more sociable hour than the NJ295 does in Firenze and could be on your route by car. It would be a lot more driving with the whole family though.

Unless they are seasoned travellers, I wouldn't recommend changing stations in Rome - so point them to a route from Termini.

PS wouldn't recommend the 8-minute connection in Firenze (or anywhere else off a sleeper!).

Agreed. In that case the next connection is train no. RV 4101: Firenze SMN depart 09 04, Orvieto arrive 11 19.

So, eg, I've put in a Munich-Rome query for a random date, which shows the sleeper, and clicked the "show intermediate stops" option for the direct sleeper...

I am still surprised though that the train doesn’t stop even for two minutes. It is a lovely scenic hill top town with a magnificent Duomo. I really thought it would warrant a stop for the Nightjet but obviously not.

Many thanks for the link. I did look at it previously but it seemed very expensive even with the saving of petrol and tolls. I will take another look at it though. Just a shame Nightjet moved the car carrying wagons from Dusseldorf to the Hamburg portion of the Innsbruck service.

I live in hope that there may one day be a car carrying overnight service again from ‘s Hertogenbosch in the future. I think the car ramp may still be there.

I may just advise my wife to pull the communication cord at two kilometres and 19 chains before Orvieto, and just get the family to leg it when the train has come to a halt.

It’s probably a matter of pathing. The NJ needs to use the HSL between Firenze and Rome and comes of it onto the old line for some parts to let faster trains pass. Not easy to make everything fit.

Rome Termini is only a couple of km from the end of the motorway and then along a couple of wide city streets so it's not too bad a drive in. The station has a huge car park too.

It’s probably a matter of pathing. The NJ needs to use the HSL between Firenze and Rome and comes of it onto the old line for some parts to let faster trains pass. Not easy to make everything fit.

I presume too that RFI make a charge for using the station, which has to be covered by potential additional revenue?
