Apart from having an enormous chip on his shoulder, is Cummings doing anything else now?
Plotting?

It would surprise me if the "Photos and parties" claim was put out just to worry the staff at number 10, make their Christmas just that little bit less happy, or possibly to get someone who was there or had evidence to break cover. I wouldn't put anything beyond him!

If he has anything, he'll put it out when it will get maximum publicity, not a couple of days before Christmas.

He might have a chip on his shoulder and he might not exactly be the nicest person ever, but if he is indeed exposing Government hypocrisy, even for obvious selfish reasons, he's being quite useful. For the moment.

He’s probably writing a book.

If the government hold steady and avoid further lockdowns, this is all going to be forgotten as there will be clear blue water between the government who favour freedom and the opposition who are baying to put us under house arrest at the slightest opportunity.

True, Starmer has done nothing except mouth mealy worded platitudesl but Khan, and certainly Drakeford, have shown how Labour will behave if they get a whiff of power.

And their inevitable need to have a coalition with authoritarian Krankie to get power will be exploited to the full.

As I said on the other forum the longer term effect of these revelations is to make people aware that the good and great who have all the inside information are not frightened of Covid (otherwise they wouldn't have sat on terraces together, partied together or driven to Barnard Castle) so why should anyone else be?

They have indvertently blown up the medias shroud waving propaganda.

Well, you've all had your say about something that was said to happen virtually twelve months before the news broke, so perhaps we can now look forward to other such events at least a year old suddenly becoming "breaking news" as the TV media like to so describe.

While these events have had the side effect, I suspect, in averting a lockdown, I still think Johnson needs to properly answer to the allegations. It's not right that senior politicians are exempt from their own rules.

Would that not lessen the newsworthyness of the allegations. Old news has not the same effect as "breaking news".

Is it true that Mafeking has been relieved?
Difference is that we knew about Mafeking in 1899. We didn't know about this until a few weeks ago. By that logic, should Ghislaine Maxwell not have been put on trial for past offences?

People are rightfully upset! My father missed his mother's funeral (and so did I for that matter) in May, which is when these photos were taken of the Tories gathering illegally to indulge in wine and cheese on the patio. It's brutally exposed the fact that it's one rule for us, and no rule for them.

So I'm sorry, Xenophon PCDGS, but this is going to run and run.

Why on earth did it take so very long for such "old news" to become "breaking news"?

I think it was sat on for a while, and released at a strategic time.

Same as the Hancock video.

To be honest, my gut feeling is that the leaker of both is the same person/people.

I share this suspicion - it's either Cummings or someone in No. 11.

I think this one is a little different, the reason being that there's thousands of people who have lost loved ones over the past 21 months and - as a result of having to "follow the rules" - were unable to visit their relative in hospital, their loved one had to die alone, couldn't get to see the body afterwards, had to choose who couldn't attend the funeral, couldn't attend a funeral, or perhaps couldn't lay on the funeral service they'd have liked to.

I'm afraid it simply doesn't wash that this is "old news" when it appears quite clear the rule-setters weren't following their rules themselves. Do not underestimate how much anger there is over this.

This is why this particular story simply isn't going to wither away, especially as it's one thing Johnson can't lampoon his way out of (like he tried to do with the population of Liverpool, for example).

Will anything of a political nature be actually achieved by this year-old news of a positive nature, save for the media and websites running a storyine somewhat reminiscent of the title of the film...."The never-ending story".

What would happen is we'd simply see a re-run of 1992-97 where things lurch from one disaster to another. The only difference this time is there isn't a Labour party ready as a "government in waiting". So this time instead of a Labour landslide in 2024, we'll just see our politics sink even further into the gutter with ever-increasing apathy.

I don't think the Conservative party would allow this to happen, which in practice will lead to Johnson being challenged sooner rather than later. We've had a lull over Christmas, but I reckon it will very likely start again once everything returns to business in January.

Indeed those power-brokers in Momentum and their figurehead of Corbyn have much to answer for in that respect.

I suspect whoever is doing the leaking may also have a motive against further restrictions. There was suspicion that the Hancock video was leaked by someone with this point of view, especially as Javid then came in and went ahead with full reopening, despite covid cases surging at the time. If this is the reason for the leaks then Cummings may not be the source if he still believes in restrictions, however someone in no.11 would likely have that motive.

I agree; it became more newsworthy as the following Christmas period approached and also as cases rose and the threat of restrictions loomed.

Had it been released in (say) August, it would not have been anywhere near as newsworthy.

In the words of "Sunny Jim" Callaghan (slightly parodied)...."Restrictions, what restrictions"....:D

You are absolutely right. It is the restrictions affecting those at the end of life that will cause the most anger. If it had only been those complaining that they couldn't party while No. 10 did, it would have gone away - party later, forgotten in days; but it wasn't.
It is hard enough in 'normal times' when you are told that there is nothing that can be done except keep the patient comfortable and try to keep the amount of pain in check, Relatives will want to spend as much time as possible by the bedside, knowing that time is limited. But to be able to spend only a token amount of time, maybe when the patient is beyond understanding, or even no time at all, must be heart breaking. Such relatives will probably feel very guilty and that they have let the deceased down big time. Similarly with the funeral, even having to decide who couldn't attend or not being able to physically be there at all.
I am surprised that those advising the Prime Minister do not appreciate that the guilt people felt has now welled up in anger, firstly that these 'events' took place at all, and also that there has been no appreciable signs of regret. It is like Paterson - if he had accepted the suspension, it would be largely forgotten. Instead 'nothing happened and if it did no rules were broken' as yet another disclosure takes place - the Bailey party which he left at 6pm 9pm, the Education party, the Quiz, the Downing Street garden gathering, the cheese-and-wine business meeting, the Rees-Mogg speech to the IEA, enquiry overseen by Case someone no-one has ever heard of who reports to Gove, probably more, it is difficult to stay in touch. So far Bailey has resigned from a job no-one knew he had, other than that, it has all been down to Stratton, who was not even at a party. Her crime appears to be that she (sort of) admitted there was a party and could not keep a straight face*.
It will stay in the news because many people expect there is more simply because it has been drip, dripping out for weeks - and no-one has said sorry to those who stuck with the rules despite the burden they imposed.

* - I know some party officials were reprimanded; punishment? They probably got a Christmas card without a photo of the family Johnson in it judging from past actions. At least May took actions (sometimes).

That’s horrible to hear. My understanding is that, in May 2020, funerals were permitted with attendance by close family. Did you choose to go beyond the rules laid out by the government, or am I misunderstanding the situation at the time?

Thank you. Unfortunately, she lived in Scotland, and we lived in England - were were meant not to travel, and I think the Anglo-Scottish border was actually closed at the time.

Plus, if there was any chance of contracting the virus in transit, then in that pre-vaccine time it wouldn't have been at all good - both my parents are midway through their 60s now, and my sister has a compromised immune system.

I was not aware that the border was ever closed.

There were several periods of time last year during which it was an offence to travel between Scotland and the rest of the UK without reasonable excuse.

The Metropolitan Police have said on a number of occasions that they consider investigating/prosecuting the alleged incidents would not be a good use of police time.

Well there are a multitude of reasons why they won't take action on government ministers but will uphold covid fines for the great unwashed. They don't want to bite the hand that feeds them and cressida quite likes her job.
