Haven’t myself, but hopefully you might find the below thread on the same type of ticket machine at Gatwick Airport useful. The thing that stands out most to me is that it prints e-tickets!

I think GWR may have something similar at Paddington as well. EMR have a TVM that prints eTickets and we trialled a proof of concept in Newcastle that worked really well. There are a lot of changes coming in the next couple of years.

One thing that the country does not need is more overcomplicated TVMs.

Completely agreed, for all they do is cause confusion for an infrequent traveller, especially if all they want is a simple day return fare. A sub minute transaction on an older TVM turns into a 5 minute+ transaction using the journey planning software and some might think their return ticket is only valid on the return train they selected

Lots now have an app on their phones to pay for things, rather than a card. Will this accommodate that too? Just one look at that screen looks too complicated to me.

Lots have a train booking app and don't need TVMs at all. All you are talking about (I think) is contactless payment.

Let's hope those changes come in the form of TVMs with user interfaces designed by people, for people, using evidence based UI paradigms*. Almost all of them** at the moment are, bluntly, rubbish.

As for GWR's at Padd, "walking wounded" older people need considering. I have to squat on the floor to use the card slot on those. That is beyond stupid, and is what you get for thinking disabled=wheelchair. The above picture seems to suffer a similar problem because there is machine body above the card machine so a tall but not very mobile person cannot look down and use it.

* i.e. looking what people do, and designing the UI to make those things trivially easy to achieve. For instance, from a South East station, a return to London and a Travelcard for immediate use really should be a single-tap thing, or at most two taps if one must reserve a train.

** I have not used LNER's so reserve comment on those.

I am tech savvy but that looks unnecessary complicated, doesn't look very user friendly at all

I saw the attached photo on LinkedIn - a new card-only machine for Transpennine Express. Looks like it might have a journey planner interface? Seems to be some more info here: https://www.evoke-creative.com/new-self-service-kiosk-for-the-gatwick-rail-station/ Has anybody tried it and have any opinions on how well it works?

Looks like it was designed by someone who does not understand users, interfaces, or rail products. I would not stick that much info in a web interface. Never mind.

Most TOCs seem to have apps with a reasonable planner based touch screen UI. Why has it not occurred to anyone other than LNER to make the TVMs identical?

The LNER TVMs are decent from a contactless point of view as the contactless functionality can be used when collecting ToD tickets. I think they are the only TVMs that do this.

I have not used them much but I do get the impression LNER are well ahead here. It might make sense for GBR just to adopt their TVM software, app and website as the GBR one and get rid of all the others.

Not sure I'd agree to be honest as there are thing that other do a lot better, but being very close (with Haywain) to the development of these TVMs we're trying to improve them as much as we can. As much as I hate the though a clean slate/blank canvas approach may be best.

I think all TVMs on the network accept those now. I have not found one that didn't recently.
Southeastern TVMs are equipped with what purport to be contactless card readers, but I have never found one that works.

We can sell E Tickets from our TTK machines now on GWR, not on every flow but on most.
