doesn't mean they are life expired though and perhaps just as well SWT had the foresight to retraction them given they are going to be mainstay of the metro for at least another 12mths and thats a rolling 12mths with the lack of progress on getting 701's into traffic.
The "foresight" as you call it was in order to reduce the maintenance requirement so the 707s could fit into the depot without needing to expand it. There was no crystal ball gazing.

Have seen a single 450 on a Chessy and a Guildford via Leatherhead this morning... things must be getting down to wire with mileages?
Saw an 8-car 450 on the Waterloo-Waterloo rounder on Saturday night as well.

I see SWR have already started striping the 455's whilst still in service. Some have the inter-carriage gangway doors missing

Pretty much anywhere and everywhere on SW Metro services, Clapham Junction is probably the best spot if you want to hop on some.
You won’t find them on Richmond/Hounslow side duties other than on the occasional loop service these days.

… And, prior to the pandemic, they were used to form 10-car trains on many of the Waterloo suburban services, i.e. 455+455+456.
Of course, that being the reason they came over from Southern - but naturally due to expired 455 miles this is no longer feasible.

And lack of passengers which means it’s not economical to life extend the legacy rolling stock.
Should think there were fewer passengers on the first lockdown when we were running 455/456 10 car combos and terminating at Kingston.
The Kingston terminating thing was new as we couldn't go into the bay as it only fits eight. So we terminated on the down road which had was a new thing when it was resignalled.

That was also one and a half years ago, and 455/456s are now considerably lower on miles

Which could have been extended - however the combination of a lack of passenger numbers and no requirement for social distancing means the need for units has reduced.

First lockdown TOCs were obliged to cater for social distancing, that is no longer the case.
Ordering 10-car 701s is looking rather dumb now, then, if 8-cars are sufficient.

Given the timetable changes, the 701 order is looking rather too large. If I was DfT, I'd be looking at part of the penalty for late delivery being part cancellation of the order.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing of course.

However, a good point re part-cancellation of the order. Another possibility is dumping the 458s and saving on the refurbishment.

Rather like closing a large portion of Waterloo for most of August 2017 to extend platforms 1-4 to handle 10 car units! No trains to Chessington for more than 3 weeks!

Adding a 456 to the 455+455 on the morning rushhour Chessington-Waterloo's made a noticable difference, in that it was normally possible to get a seat from Tolworth (still standing only from Malden Manor), something which wasn't possible beforehand.

However I do wonder if 10-car services will be necessary again anytime soon on the Chessington branch.

I'll bet they are contractually committed to that - Porterbrook won't have left that to chance!
SWR had already shown their hand on Dec 22 service scale back so it was evident then that they would have too much stock so why they went ahead with the 458 2nd refurbishment seems odd other than maybe needing pacify the dark blue tory strongholds down the Pompy line or give Widnes something to keep them going.

That's what it is about - the Pompey line whingers!

But I am assuming their numbers are much depleted these days and for the remainder moaning about the 450s will be the least of their concerns once rail cuts really start taking effect.

They would have been better off refitting a portion of the 450's with 2+2 for outer suburban use to appease them rather than a 458 mash up.

How many class 455 diagrams are there now? Seems odd to stop doing overhauls when the new trains are still reportedly a long way from entering public service.

I remember Connex ran down too many CEPs and hired the Hastings unit for a few weeks whilst some units had work done and were put back in to service.
The final Connex CEPs ran in appalling condition, they were pretty much derelict

List denotes the current status of SWR's Metro / Inner-Suburban fleet as of 8/12/2021, according to information sourced by forum members.

Class 450 and Class 701 units are not shown as these will remain with SWR permanently
Class 450 and Class 458 units are planned to be withdrawn from Inner-Suburban duties

Currently, 0x Class 701 units are in service
looks like 458535 has finally moved away from clapham yard

I was reading SWR's "Customer Report", dated September 2021 (you can find these on the timetable racks at Waterloo station). In the report, it says that SWR have "conducted a significant piece of work to re-baseline all of the doors on our inner suburban 455 stock [...]".

What does it mean to re-baseline the doors?

Does anyone know if 456018 is outside and visible at Wimbledon please? Considering heading out that way in the near future for it and my last two 455s. Thanks in advance.

I've seen an increasing number of 701s around Wimbledon depot though, so I'm not clear on how long it really is until they enter service: does anyone know? Here's a pic of 701016 being moved in Wimbledon yesterday.

Not until the ASLEF issues can be sorted out - won’t matter how many are ready for handover to SWR if there are no drivers to train/drive them…

That's something they've written for customers to read? Is it not mentioned anywhere else in the text?

There's a separate thread for the 701 introduction:
