After a quick spin to Glasgow my return south went something like this,85040 ROARING on 1V59 from Glasgow to Preston on the 12.10 Glasgow Plymouth but the driver declared it a failure at Preston and was removed in favour of 90027 which to me was rancid at the time but anyways it was done to Crewe where i bailed and fell onto 20218 & 20099 working the 15.47 Crewe to Derby which was done to Stoke where i bailed for 85014 another roaring machine which was working 1V62 16.18 Manchester to Plymouth as far as Birmingham New St where I struck lucky again with 85003 working 1A71 17.04 Shrewsbury London Euston which was done to the blocks. Happy days indeed and plenty of roaring miles to be had.

Not a bad way to get from Glasgow to London!

On this day 9 years ago I had landed in LHR (Heathrow), caught the RailAir coach to Reading, and took a train to Goring and Streatley. It was delayed (quelle surprise!)

A trip to Saltburn.

DMU 07:36 Beeston-Derby
45018 08:19 Derby-Darlington
DMU Darlington-Saltburn
DMU Saltburn-Darlington
31121 14:14 Darlington-York

The 31 was not in good health. Substituting for a Type 4 it hardly got above 60mph, and lost bags of time. Expected it to be replaced at York but it stayed on, we didn’t.

Then a real surprise, Deltic 55002 in newly acquired green livery arrived to take out the 1550 York-Kings Cross. It had recently been outshopped by Doncaster Works after a classified repair (it’s last).

55002 15:50 York-Grantham
DMU 17:41 Grantham-Nottingham
45136 18:30 Nottingham-Beeston

A very nice set of moves indeed. I bet the pair of 20s on the Crewe - Derby were a bit on the chilly side.

A trip to Saltburn.
Well if the TPE plans for class 68 deployment come to fruition, we may yet have reason to visit Saltburn on a regular basis in 2022. Here's hoping ...

Meanwhile, another fine selection from me:

Thursday 22/12/77
45066 0819 York – Birmingham New Street via Cudworth, Masborough
47140 1118 Birmingham New Street – Reading via Solihull

Friday 22/12/78
40074 1704 Leeds – York
47471 1733 York – Leeds
DMU Leeds – Selby
55021 1852 Selby – York
40042 1920 York – Leeds

Saturday 22/12/79
So we rolled onto Anglesey with 40112, hoping to see a pair of class 40s waiting outside the stabling point ready to work the 0053 relief to Euston. Nope. There was 40133 at the Anglesey Aluminium sidings, shunting wagons around, and that was it. Cupboard bare.
We watched as 40112 (with its defective boiler) was detached and sent onto the stabling point, and – once we had warmed up a little – we too wandered up there to find out what would be working the 0053 (booked a pair of 40s). The sight that met our eyes was glorious – 40133 had arrived, been refuelled, and coupled in multiple with 40112. There’s our answer!
40133 + 40112 0053 Holyhead – Crewe
Thankfully the fitters at Holyhead had managed to revive the train heat boiler on 40112. Indeed, it was putting out such high pressure steam that the pipe on the front coach burst, so there was a 37’ delay whilst it was shunted out.
I had a lengthy fester in the all-night buffet at Crewe, then set about returning home to York (in a manner of speaking):
86019 0737 Crewe – Warrington Bank Quay
DMU Warrington Bank Quay – Manchester Victoria
47523 1050 Manchester Victoria – Huddersfield
40115 1143 Huddersfield – Manchester Victoria (Relief)
85034 1423 Manchester Piccadilly – Stockport
86103 1436 Stockport – Manchester Piccadilly
31242 1515 Manchester Piccadilly – Sheffield via Romiley, New Mills
This 31 was on load 11, and lost 10 minutes to Sheffield, struggling with the heavy load.
At Sheffield it re-engined as booked:
47006 1625 Sheffield – Chesterfield
45025 1706 Chesterfield – Sheffield, 30’ late.
This was the 1140 Poole – Newcastle, which detached a Leeds portion at Sheffield. The Leeds portion was on the front, so the 45 worked through to Leeds, with the loco off the Manchester – Harwich taking over the Newcastle portion at Sheffield. Yes, it’s that underpowered 31 again!
31242 1741 Sheffield – York, 40’ late.

Thursday 22/12/83
Once again I’m making a trip to London to pick up my passport and visa from the Polish Embassy. I had worked a night shift in Leeds Control, so I wasn’t too worried about the motive power, all I wanted was a good doss:
43080 + 43043 0705 Leeds – Kings Cross
After picking up my passport I returned to Kings Cross, to see what was on offer. There was a 1230 Kings Cross – Edinburgh relief, 10 Mk 1 compartment coaches, that’ll do nicely. As for the loco, well, the phrase “bottom of the barrel” sprung to mind:
31168 1230 Kings Cross – York via Hambleton
After negotiating Kings Cross station throat, the power handle was opened wide, and remained there for the next 57 minutes! 15’ late into York.

Saturday 22/12/90
I’m off to visit my parents in Plymouth, but as usual I chose the long way round, this time to cover the Saturdays Only Brighton - Plymouth:
DMU 04xx Reading – Redhill
EMU 1705 Redhill – Brighton
73109 0905 Brighton – Portsmouth Harbour
50003 1023 Portsmouth Harbour – Exeter St Davids via Southampton, Salisbury
50018 1422 Exeter St Davids – Plymouth

Wednesday 22/12/93
43164 + 43149 0740 Reading – Bristol Temple Meads
37407 0900 Bristol Temple Meads – Southampton via Chandlers Ford
37407 1112 Southampton – Romsey
158 827 Romsey – Southampton
2413 Southampton – Waterloo
Then half a day at work, and home again. Some good new 37 track for me.

OK, so I have now ploughed through my moves book to figure out how many Cans I have had for haulage. And the answer is...

94

Those I missed out on are:

86218 (Exported to Hungary. Operated by Floyd ZRt, no. 0450 004-1)
86221 (Scrapped in 2003)
86232 (Exported to Hungary. Operated by Floyd ZRt, no. 0450 003-3)
86235 (Exported to Bulgaria. Operated by Bulmarket, renumbered to 85004)
86429 (Written-off in Colwich accident in 1986)
86607 (Stored at Crewe)

The 86/2s are all part of the batch that transferred to East Anglia, so they stopped turning up at New St early doors. Am I off to Eastern Europe to chase them? No.

Some other snippets:

86030 is the only one I had as an 86/0; also had it as 86430.
86312 is the only one I had as an 86/3; never had it again.
I also had 86258 as 86501.
I haven't had any 86/6s as an 86/6.

I cleared all 100 86s, the final one being 86437, in August 1988. I only had one run off 86429 - one of the two destroyed at Colwich (along with 86211) - on the SO Paignton - Glasgow overnight forward from Basford Hall.
Like @xotGD I've never had an 86/6 numbered as such. I admit to having a soft spot for the 86/1s, being just as happy to have one of those on a train as a class 87.

Of the Roarers it looks like this:
81 - cleared all of those which made it to renumbering, I missed the two which were scrapped before renumbering;
82 - missed 82006 (several near misses but never got it), and again the two scrapped before renumbering
83 - rather more gaps here, I missed 002/003/004/010/014/015
84 - the rarest Roarers on passenger - I only ever had two of them, 84003 and 84006
85 - cleared all of these, with 85021 being my final one in May 1987

I also cleared classes 87 / 89 / 90 / 91.

I've never yet had an 88, and there's still plenty of room for improvement with the class 92s. I've had 13 class 92s, but 7 of those were on freight services whilst I was notionally working, so depending on your own set of rules that might not count. Then there's the 93s whenever they arrive ...

I'd stopped going out bashing by now, but was still recording journeys. This was first part of going home via the not quite yet in-laws. It included some new line for me, but also some very familiar track, alas no longer with the Goyles.

50050 Oxford to Coventry (Paddington to BNS service)
150132 Coventry to Leicester (12.25 Coventry to Nottingham service).

This was the first time I'd done the Coventry to Nuneaton section, only reopened in 1987.
I missed 1990 earlier in the week...

Friday 21st December 1990

47831 Oxford to Coventry
150123 Coventry to Leicester

And then two days later...

Sunday 23rd December 1990

156452 Leicester to Nuneaton
86102 Nuneaton to Crewe (my penultimate recording of 86 haulage)
90007 Crewe to WBQ

Time to return from Plymouth to London, so I’ve booked a sleeper on the Up Midnight, confidently expecting a 50 on it, with maybe another 50 as pilot to Newton Abbot.
50026 0030 Plymouth – Paddington via Bristol Parkway
33012 pilot to Newton Abbot
I couldn’t believe my eyes! Not only was it a Crompton piloting the Up Midnight (most unexpected) but also it was in some odd variety of the normal livery, with black window surrounds. I hadn’t seen that livery before.

I see my post has been moved here - no problem, I just don't know this forum well enough to know where everything goes! So here follows the original ...
I’m posting this as attached for general entertainment, but if anyone else has accounts of madcap rail activities do feel free to share them! I found some old notebooks in the attic recently, and just perusing them tonight I noticed a fairly crazy trip which started one Sunday evening after a few beers in a pub with some friends, and lasted until the following evening.

I was at university in Loughborough at the time, and interspersed with lectures and attempts to chase after young ladies, I enjoyed roaming the ECML on occasional weekly East Midlands Ranger tickets. Trouble was, once I had the ticket I felt a strong need to use it, and use it well! This particular use of this ticket was one of my more intensive days, taking advantage of it being available 24 hours a day back in June 1978.

The attached file shows the timetabled times of the trains I used, and the figures to the right are the mileages. Just a couple of notes, the arrival into Doncaster at 12.46 and departure at 12.32 was due to the latter train running late – all the more satisfying back in 1978 when it was nigh on impossible for students like myself to know what other trains were doing until you physically arrived at the station. The 4 hour side trip to Lincoln (St Marks no less) might look odd but it was to visit my Aunt and Uncle, before returning to Loughborough for the long walk back to campus.

Other than that, the log shows some fairly insane haulage bashing, as a good few of these were deliberately seeking Deltic haulage in order to measure the speeds. I can’t say I’d sacrifice sleep so willingly these days, even if the ECML was still active overnight, but it did seem like fun at the time!ECML.jpg

A pre-Christmas move from sister in York to parents in Reading:
55013 0245 York – Kings Cross
This was a Sunday morning, but as it was just before Christmas there was no engineering work, so we ran main line all the way (via Selby).
43050 + 43051 0800 Paddington – Reading

Monday 24/12/79
… and a year later my parents had moved to Plymouth, so this time the pre-Christmas move was York to Plymouth:
47549 1329 York – Plymouth via Cudworth, Birmingham New Street, Bristol Temple Meads

Wednesday 24/12/80
… and the following year I’m living in London and travelling down to Plymouth:
50003 1700 Waterloo – Exeter St Davids
45001 2055 Exeter St Davids – Plymouth

Saturday 24/12/83
I was working night shift on Christmas Eve – and not delivering presents either. At least I could have a run with a 40 first (albeit only 40029, which was always the most weak and useless specimen):
40029 1710 York – Stalybridge
47487 1904 Stalybridge – Leeds
(Sunday 25/12/83)
Once all the trains were safely tucked up in bed, we closed the Control Office, and I set off home. I had to cycle from Leeds to York in sub-zero temperatures in the wee small hours of the morning. I ended up cycling along part of the Leeds urban motorway in error! Merry Christmas (Bah Humbug!).

Wednesday 24/12/97
Having visited my parents, I set off home to Reading:
43026 + 43031 1330 Plymouth – Reading, 40’ late start waiting driver.

I always made my homeward journey ahead of Christmas Eve, so no moves from me today.

For tomorrow, I never did get round to doing the Christmas Day dinnerex on the Great Central when we lived in the area.

I do have something to report on Boxing Day. Until then, to all regulars on this thread, many thanks for your contributions and have a Merry Christmas! :D

Thank you to you and everyone else who’s contributed to this thread - it’s been a fantastic read and resulted in mixed emotions for me - happy memories of bygone days but also frustration that my mum and dad saw fit to throw away all the notes and photos I’d left in their loft without checking if I wanted to keep anything. Ah well

I enjoyed roaming the ECML on occasional weekly East Midlands Ranger tickets. Trouble was, once I had the ticket I felt a strong need to use it, and use it well!
An alternative purchase with a much more restricted area but still with a choice of routes on which to enjoy cl45/46/47 and AC Electric haulage was to purchase a (Student) Ordinary Return between Derby and Rugby.
Valid for three months and with options of routing via Leicester/Nuneaton (with of course break of journey at Loughborough), via Birmingham, or the less glamorous change at Tamworth onto the AM4 Trent Valley Stopper (only one each way loco hauled call at Tamworth Low Level back then).
There is of course no suggestion tickets weren't checked very often in that geography in the mid-seventies.

I can’t say I’d sacrifice sleep so willingly these days, even if the ECML was still active overnight, but it did seem like fun at the time!
Another interesting nocturnal activity (at the time!) was to drop into Crewe station in the late evening to observe the frantic activity as the various postal trains came and went:
Up and Down West Coast (Special) TPO
The York Shrewsbury and return
Out and back Cardiff Crewe and return
Out and back Lincoln/Peterborough
the down North West TPO
Was there one from and back to North Wales? or was that just a passenger train with BGs?
Also a scattering of sleepers and other overnight services and the occasional freight - most bypassed the station on the independent lines but I recall a fertiliser train ex UKF Ince would stop on the middle roads for a crew change.
Crewe of course had an all night buffet (ref post 2450 above) to retire to at quieter times.

Exit routes from Crewe led to other interesting experiences
On one occasion 02.25 Aberystwyth (York Shrewsbury TPO), change at Machynlleth for Portmadoc (1970's spelling) and walk to FR station where my travelling companion requested a Priv return to Dduallt (the then limit of the FR) whilst I in turn, being fearful of the risk of mispronunciation, asked for 'a return to the same'! After returning to Portmadoc I think we caught a bus to Blaenau thence down the Conwy Valley line - confirmation may be provided by another contributor!
On another occasion it was onto the down Barrow Sleeper (seated) which dropped us (a different travelling companion this time) at Lancaster around 04.30. We walked to Morecambe and caught an early bus to Heysham to travel on the branch before closure (!) on the Up 'Ulster Express'. The Belfast ferry had ceased running by then and the station was going through the closure process, and thus the Ulster Express departed with just two passengers (us) plus a fully staffed restaurant car! The DMU ('Boat Train - no boat') to Leeds had departed empty and the Manchester train 'Belfast Boat Express' had already been withdrawn.

Unfortunately I cannot exactly date any of the above although Heysham was closed in 1975 (re-opened in 1987) so it would have been spring/early summer 1975, and the Dduallt trip a year or two later.

I can however confirm the date of my forthcoming Christmas Day entry - watch this space.
