When the 317/6 were on great northern I used to make the effort to be in that set myself. Standard class on them was better than first on the 317/3. A situation that still exists on Stansted express. I avoid the 317/8 like the plague. I think Nxea are missing a tick they could have 3rd class as well on that route for passengers in the 317/8

Sorry to disappoint you but I'm 99.9% sure that the seat backs used in the 365s were also used in the 313s except in the pair of seats immediately behind the driver which stayed as the original lowback seating.
My mistake then, must be the cushions, makes them look a completely different shape!

Got on one today (123?) and thought I'd give a quick comment.

Inside it looks exactly the same as the other FCC 313s, with the obvious exception of the seats. From the outside, it has the same vinyls as the other 313s (so not the newer design on the 321s). That makes sense, for a uniform design and the fact they could just reuse the existing artwork file!

I have to say that the low seats do totally transform the ambience, and to be honest I don't think in a good way. I boarded at Potters Bar and sat at the far end and realised that you can now see everyone - and they can see you. It's like a tube train, but for a longer journey, and you find yourself being stared at. It feels odd, given the high seat backs usually shield people. As the train filled up nearer London, it became less of an issue.

But, before that at Hadley Wood, a muslim guy got on and someone in the next row looked at him for a while and then upped and moved to the next carriage! Seriously, do people STILL feel uncomfortable when they see someone who looks similar to the pictures of the 7/7 terrorists? He'd sat down and started reading The Sun.. (maybe it was his choice of paper then!).

When I walked through the train to get off, I also noticed that some of the verticle poles from the seats to ceiling were loose, and the wheelchair area is in a different place. Not only that, but the area under the pantograph (where the wheelchair 'space' now is) has almost nothing to hold on to!

The downside is that wheelchair users will be confused with the different positioning, the upside is that the area has no tip-up seats and will take lots of people in busy periods, as long as a buggy owner doesn't get on and expect to take it all up.

Also, the seat cushions have been changed, but they haven't cleaned the seats themselves (which are filthy and worn) and I could also see that many base cushions were loose too - as in not fitted securely.

Did that man do the whole 313 by himself? :P

I think one of the best things they could do to the 313's is get rid of some of that yellow!

ARGHH! No!! National Express ruined the interior of some of its trains when it was as 'one'.

The yellow is nasty, and I don't know why they haven't repainted it - the grab rails into FCC pink, and the panels with the cream/white anti-graffiti paint. Cost I suppose.

Well, I probably prefer the old one interior colours than I ever will of Southern interiors (bar the fleet of 377s with the - on borrowed time - blue seating which look nice).

The ex-Connex ones? If so, then they're definitely the best of the Electrostar interiors.. but sadly they weren't high density enough for Southern!:(

Yes, that would be them... Very nice indeed, but sadly I believe that interior is being stripped out.

I'm not so much worried about the seating (well, I'd prefer 2+2) but the colours. The blue/orange looked modern and able to stand the test of time, while the green doesn't.

new lino?

I was on 313134 yesterday and yes, it did have lino floor.

They've done a decent job on these - they look virtually identical to the 313/0s except for the obvious difference in seating. FCC have re-added the seats that LOROL removed returning the capacity to 228 seats from 202. That's still three lower than the 313/0s, which have 231 seats.

Question is, did LOROL keep the seats and handrails they took out for FCC to put them back, or have they 'borrowed' these parts from unallocated 313121?

No idea but I have found out from various sources that the 313/0s that FCC inherited from WAGN does not have the same seating that the 365s have as there are slight differences in the seating used.

So yes I was wrong but this goes to show the need to double check and double check is still vitally important due to the original information I was given being incorrect.

I must say Liveries do make for a colorful railway, and some of them do look nice. I know I'll probably get shot down for this, but I'm a huge fan of the Southern Livery, especially on the Electrostars. I also think the SWT suits the 159, and Cross Country on the 170's. I don't like the NatEx on the 317's or infact the Pale Blue on the StanEx. However, I do think that changing livery and the colour of internal fittings is a waste of money in many cases. I mean a token one when a company changes, but in the case of c2c, the (which I think was a very suitable) purple livery is changing for a white one, and then if National Express is banned from keeping the franchise, a new operator will mean another new livery. So we would have four liveries on one route. As long as the train is clean, I don't think any passenger will care. At the end of the day the non-enthusiast wants to go to from A to B.
But yeah,
BACK TO TOPIC :L
I think I'd prefer the high back seating regardless of the journey I'm making. I really like 317's that are still in the ONE livery, as they have the high back seats and the StanEx ones don't. Low back just hurts my neck, even from Smitham/Whytelafe South to London I often want to sleep :L
