66135 ran today's 6O13 Acton to Newhaven Marine Ag Tml today. Having got as far as plumpton before realising the Seaford branch was SHUT due to overrunning engineering works.

After a 20 min delay, 66135 finally got underway out of Lewes, via Glynde to Hampden Park.

The train dumped it's wagons at Hampden Park (or just after the signal), and ran light engine to Eastbourne where it reversed, then back up to Hampden Park, over the junction to couple to the consists rear.

The train then ran "6V00" 1518 Vstp polegate to Acton.

Here's a video of it at Glynde.

Presumably , DB Cargo didn't "check before they travelled".

The event caused a bit of faff because of the runaround, with trains being held at various stations until the manoeuvre was completed.

Very interesting.

Mods move to trip planning and reports if necessary.

Crikey must be an old operating hand on down there to organise that although as is often the case you try and plan something unusual in adavnce no one wants to know but when your up against it anything's possible

Given the delays etc I'm suprised they didn't just shunt it into Lewes P3 and run around there, but then again it was 18 wagons long.

What suprised me even more is that the closure was , what I thought, attributed to the work at Seaford. Could they really not run it down to Newhaven town yard ? Assuming southerham junction to Newhaven town junction was unaffected

I'd have thought that the Brighton platforms at Lewes were more intensively used, and hence reversing there would cause more hassle. Also, is it allowed to drive a freight train backwards like that (especially if stretches of line are only signalled for one direction)? It would have meant backing it into P3, then using the crossover east of Lewes, running through P4 to the crossover on the Brighton side of Lewes (assuming the length was such that the wagons didn't go past there), and then backing the train again until past the crossing east of Lewes (and then to London). Dropping the wagons between Hampden Park and Eastbourne seems to make more sense - running round there would be a simpler manoeuvre, and everything else could be held back at Lewes or in Eastbourne station while it was happening.

I dont believe the shunt from down main to p3 is signalled (EDIT: Have just checked, it isn't). The train would have had to push into p4 or 5, which are only 7 cars long so the loco wouldn't be able to run round. It IS permitted to push back over short distances where signalled but requires a member of crew watching the rear of the train who remains in contact with the driver throughout. Unsignalled moves would only be authorised if there was no other feasible option.
Running to Newhaven Yard wasn't an option because the points at Newhaven needed to be in the possession to allow the on track equipment to do the work required to reopen the line.

Thanks for clearing that up. I've seen the odd path from Newhaven marine to Newhaven town yard via Lewes a few times, but like you say probably wouldn't fit so would need top and tail . Stps that never ran

Were those paths definitely in for an actual train with wagons rather than a RHTT or light loco? I'd be very surprised if wagons needed to be tripped between the two yards as they deal in different cargos and are operated by different FOCs.
But yes, in theory a top/tailed train could be signalled into P2, 4 or 5 and given the road off the end of the platform to allow the rear loco to be drawn behind the signal on the Newhaven end.

They were dB cargo paths. dB cargo still use both yards frequently. My assumption would be sand from marine to day aggs at town.

Schedule here http://charlwoodhouse.co.uk/rail/liverail/train/23508375/18/03/21

Never ran though but it's not the first time this schedule has popped up STP.

Surprised that the DBC driver signed the road from Southerham Junction to Eastbourne. I wonder if a conductor driver was hired-in from Southern at short notice?

As unusual as it may seem at first glance, there are probably numerous dB drivers that sign the route for engineers trains etc when works take place. Although I did hear no Acton drivers sign the route and that it was likely a hirher green driver

They were bringing a pilot driver to conduct the train to Eastbourne and back.
