I have been looking up train times as provided we don’t get locked down again i am going from Cwmbran to Ebbw Vale on the 27th.Going up there is a nice connection at Cross Keys for Ebbw Vale.
Coming back i’m better off going to Cardiff.
But National Rail enquiries doesn’t seem to want to acknowlege changing at Newport and Cross Keys.I had to look up each leg separately!

I travelled from Pye Corner to Newport and back yesterday morning. On Sundays some trains run Cardiff-Newport-Ebbw Vale. The Cardiff bound train was quite well loaded with over 50% of seats taken in my carriage. Most passengers looked as though were going to Cardiff for Christmas shopping and the like. About four or five got off at Newport.

Going back, the train was almost empty. I think only myself and one other just along for the ride boarded at Newport.

For those who like to know these things the sticky numbers were 170205 and 170206.

If it's no quicker to change at Cross Keys, journey planners will generally just give you the itinerary with the fewest changes.

If it's cheaper to make additional changes, some sites will offer that. Trainsplit will offer such a journey, if you ask it to show value fares, even if it's slower.

If you are just looking for a journey planner without fares, there is no need to plan each leg separately; www.fastjp.com allows you to specify change points e.g. select via: Crosskeys and then tick the box 'must change at'.

In this case, there is a cheaper 'not via Cardiff' fare. SDR £10.30 vs £16.60 any permitted.
