At Troon today waiting for the 10:24 to Glasgow, 110 and 003 arrived on the 10:09 to Ayr, running 9 minutes late. Damn, no camera! That pair had been stabled at Shields the previous afternoon. Nothing at Shields as we passed today, so I guess that might be the only pair in service. Plenty at Polmadie, though i cannot confirm which units, as a coal train was parked up between us and them. (OOps, just noticed I put 103 instead of 003 - corrected)

No i just always thought the first of the batch was always sent first. :o

Not really, IIRC 377501 wasn't the first to be sent, and in fact it was one of the last to enter service I think due to it being used as a Christmas tree at Derby

377501 was the first unit to enter service, after being the first to be sent. However units won't always be in service as they are develiered as units can take different times to be commissioned (377509 being a good example of having two other units commissioned while it kept failing).

377503 was the final unit to come into service due to being held as a xmas tree.

They have made 380101, does it matter in what order they were sent?

In truth, the first is often the last to enter service. The first is often instrumented up for type testing and is incomplete inside. By the time such tests are finishhed, the unit often goes back on the end of the production line to be refitted. Certainly happened on 465.001/465.201/466.001, also on the Pendolino's 390.001.

I don't know what's happening on the ground but info I have access to shows 4 Class 380 from 8 diagrammed, but none in service today..... Other fleets still low availability due to backlog of repairs required.

... means we're 40% of the way to getting the 10 in service that we need for the temporary timetable. :D

How are passengers getting on with the SDO? Anyone significantly overcarried yet?

So next Sunday the majority of Argyle Line services will operated by class 318 units then?

That's great that they're running them. It must be that they are thrown in as replacements for other diagrammed stock as and when.

001/003/101/102/103/104/110/111 are units shown as currently available. Not sure how 004 got there?

IIRC, they can't chuck them out on any old service - there are specific services they can operate.

As for 004, pretty sure that it was reported on scot-rail as being out again today.

The 1530 from Glasgow to Ayr is a 380 , I managed to get on it today for a jaunt down to Troon . A pretty smooth ride but the doors didnt close at Johnstone ! A six car 318 with a defective door whisked me back to Glasgow . The cold must be affecting doors on these trains .

A couple of weeks ago I attempted to board a 318 with a car locked up out of service and an adjoining car with a defective door. Needless to say, I didn't succeed.

Can anyone whose travelled on one of these give an opinion of what they're like? I'd love to know whether the bigger windows are noticeable, how they compare with the Junipers and other Desiro's etc.

Well Chris i've had a look at the interiors and they don't look anything like the other Desiros interiors (350/444/450) so I too would be interested in opinions!

On the contrary, they are clearly quite similar to other Desiros in teh pics I've seen. The seats are exactly the same as a 350/1 or 444, just with the local TOC's fabric. The tables are different, yes, but it really is just yet another Desiro seating variant.

When you are on one, it will quite clearly be from the same stable as any other Desiro, in exactly the same way that any Electrostar or Turbostar is clearly seen to be the same stable when you compare them internally...

Well to me the 444/450/350(1/2) both seem very common (probably because the LMs were diverted from the same order!) the seats do seem different on the 380.

Really - they seem almost exactly the same to me, just laid out differently.

380

350/1

The only thing that might be slightly different is the amount of padding, but the saloon generally is very similar.

I agree, having travelled on 350/1 units
I suspect the apparent difference is the 350/1 is high density airline style seating, whereas the 380 has almost all tables
In fact the 380 is almost very similar in layout to the 72 seat Mark 3 coach

I personally think tables on commuter routes are a waste of time
I laughed when they put them into the Class 318 units, they just looked daft

The only time they should be installed is if the train is going to be used on a route where catering is likely
