Hornby fan locos, squeeling

Must be a common problem . Locomotives from Hornby with a working fan, making a loud unattractive squeeling noise.

Does anyone have a fix?
As bad as it sounds, I have put oil on the two gold pulleys which drive the shaft propelling the fan (and oil on the elastic which I'm sure will fail at some point), however some slight improvement the sound persists.

Without too much dissection it appears to be contact between the two gold pulleys with the band between them. Image attached.

Has anyone identified a fix? Thanks

If it's the rubber band squealing you could try the car fan belt fix of dusting with talcum powder but to be honest it sounds more like a plastic against plastic rubbing noise (check for clearances around the fan or possibly a lubrication problem (try a dot of oil).

Indeed, I’m not a fan of rotating fans (they are pretty pointless when your running your model at speed) and have completely removed them from my Hornby HSTs. Although they are static, I’m quite pleased with them now!

I'm a big fan (pardon the pun given the thread topic) of FGW HSTs and that's just super!
Was it a difficult job to do? I'd be interested in doing something similar given how expensive the RTR versions are.

Are you asking why modellers try their own repairs before taking a model back? I expect the simple answer is that a lot of the faults with models tend to be fairly minor things (i.e. screws not sitting properly, electrical contacts slightly bent) and therefore are really quite easy to solve. It can be easier to have a go at bending a bit of copper back with a screwdriver, for example, then testing it and only then deciding if you need to send it back than finding the engine won't run and then sending it back straight away.
