Hi,

Is anybody able to shed any light on Southampton this weekend. It appears SWR are terminating at Central but from both directions, with 1Wxx services calling at Eastleigh but not Parkway, however cross country appear to be running as booked. Is there single line working through the area or something?

There’s something odd going on, it was discussed in that thread about the weekday works a week ago. When I first looked SWR inducated a full block Eastleigh and Woolston to Southampton. That was still shown on the online version of the weekly engineering works poster yesterday.

XC were originally diverted via Laverstock. That changed back to via Winchester sometime after the Salisbury incident.

I suppose the opentraintimes maps might show what’s really happening…

OTT only shows a LB between St Denys and Woolston. I suppose the decision was taken to pull the Southampton works to focus on Salisbury and then the relevant train planning team had minimum time to react and this is the best they could come up with.

Probably. I just noticed in one of the many Salisbury threads that it was last Monday morning people posted that the XC timetable reverted to the normal route.

It seems it’s still a full block tomorrow though, west of Eastleigh and including Central.

The 11:06 CrossCountry service from Bournemouth to Manchester has been retimed to 11:47 and I was caught out on the day - TrainSplit did send an email about today's disruption but it mentioned my journey is unaffected (which is a lie).

I arrived Bournemouth station at 11:01 and got on the 10:59 South Western Railway service to Southampton Central, and got on a rail replacement service to Eastleigh, intending to get back on train at 12:11 to continue my journey. The train didn't appear on time with delay to 12:33 expected. Then I checked the website and found out the train was at the opposite platform. Soon a platform change was announced, and the reason was that the preceding run was terminated short at Eastleigh, with another train at platform 3 replacing the Southampton segment.

I suspect there is single line working between Eastleigh and Southampton, to explain the fact that some but not all trains still running, and the fact that a previous run had to be terminated short despite being on time in the arrival.

I was confused about this too. At Waterloo there was announcements saying change for a rail replacement bus at Eastleigh. There was an hourly service from Waterloo to Eastleigh and hourly to Southampton Central. I thought we were going to terminate at Eastleigh. Services didn't call at Southampton Airport Parkway and called at Eastleigh instead.

Cross Country at 2145 to Bournemouth departed from P1 at Southampton Central, a first for me.

What was your original full itinerary? I think we need to know where you were actually supposed to be going on XC to work out why TrainsSplit wrote that?

But there was no single line working according to opentraintimes maps, the trains that did run through used the normal lines and platforms.

My original itinerary was 11:06 CrossCountry to Basingstoke retimed to 11:47. The arrival into Basingstoke changed little. As I was on a flexible ticket, I just got on the first train at the station and arrived Southampton, and hop on a replacement bus to Eastleigh, although I would end up on the train departed by Southampton (which was eventually cancelled) anyway according to the timetable (my practice using flexible tickets is to get as far as possible to a station with the most back-up opportunities - getting to Eastleigh means I may be able to get on a train departed from Portsmouth if things go wrong at Southampton)

And the reason quoted for my train turning short was due to shortage of train crew. The actual thing happened at Eastleigh was a platform change due to train turned short, another train was dispatched to Southampton, and the service status of the Southampton to Waterloo train was stated as ran short from Eastleigh.

As the departure from Eastleigh was slightly delayed, it arrived Basingstoke just one minute before the CrossCountry train. I was not sure if the affected passengers from Southampton to London could ran the connection back to the original train or not.

So that explains why TrainSplit said your journey wouldn't be affected, because had you simply waited at Bournemouth and got on the planned XC service you’d have got to Basingstoke at the intended time anyway.

Cross Country were terminating at Eastleigh today. Cross Country don't usually call there.

That's because the whole line between Bournemouth and Eastleigh is blocked today - there is no choice but to terminate there.

That’s correct, but over the last few years, (certainly 10 or more I’ve noticed), they have called there whenever this particular blockade is in place. XC trains visit the Eastleigh platforms 2&3 daily ‘en route’ to and from the traction depot. When todays timetable operates they shunt across to P1 before departure, I think the main reason is to make room for GWR through trains. Passenger services don’t have a suitably signalled route so cannot arrive in P1 in the down direction,

If you didn’t know already the GWR trains also pick up the Chandlers Ford calls, although they don’t normally call there.

I noticed a GWR depart 158 Eastleigh to Romsey. Was a surprise too.-

There is a similar case today and TrainSplit has sent an email saying my journey is affected. A train that I'm scheduled to take is retimed to depart 1 minute earlier from my boarding station, arriving at my intended time.
